Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sort by Address Field

In building my current database of approx 3800 prospects, I now realize i wish I had kept the numeric entry in the address field separate from the street. This way I could have sorted by street and then by number. Now when I sort by the address field, the list generated first looks at the numeric value and then the street. Therefore, I can't sort by street name only.

Is there a way to extract the number from the address field and include it in its own field?

    Thanks, Norm

    RE: Sort by Address Field

    test = "105 Elm St"

    ? val(test)
    = 105.000000

    val("12345") is 12345

    val("abc234") is 0

    val("1234abc234") is 1234

    Any help?

      RE: Sort by Address Field

      Sorry Stan,

I'm not sure what you are asking me to do. I want to be able to remove the number from the street address and put the number in its' own field so that I can then sort by street.

      Is this possible?

      Thanks, Norm

I must have been b rain dead when I responded earlier.

        How about...

        TEST = "123 Elm St."

        ? left(test,len(word(test,1)))
        = "123"

        ? substr(test,len(word(test,1))+2,len(alltrim(test)))
        = "Elm St."
        There can be only one.

          RE: Sort by Address Field

          Norm,

What Stan has shown you is the code to use in an update field expression. First you need to create 2 new fields, one for the number and one for thstreet without the number. Now go to Operations select new and select Update records which is at the bottom of the list. Now select the table you need to work on. Now you will have the expression builder to work with to use the code and split the field. Just to play safe make a copy of the table first, so you can experiment and have a good practice.

            Stan,

Thanks for your help. As you can see from thr post after yours, Keith assumed I didn't have a clue how to execute your advice. Thank God for intuition.

Well, wish me luck. I'll let you know how I make out.

            Thanks again,

              Norm,

Yes you are right, I did assume that you did not have a clue. It was your other message when you wrote "I'm not sure what you are asking me to do." which gave me a bit of a hint. But, I pleased that you were greatful for the help.

                Stan & Keith,

Thanks for all your help. I finally was able to get the db the way I wanted it in a round about way. When I separated the number part of my address field I didn't realize that 300+ addresses had P O Box Addresses so that they would separate by placing a "P" in the number field because it interpreted that as the first word etc.

I did manage to change those manually last night and now have all 3800 prospects the way I want.

Thanks Again for all your help
