Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Open Multiple *.adb files

    HI:

    Background:
    I have 3 seperate Alpha Projects. Their related to a single department but each proforms a seperate function.

    project1.adb { New Business }
    project2.adb { Registration }
    project3.adb { Commissions }

    Question:

    Is there a way to set up a menu that would allow switching back and forth between projects? I do not need to run 2 at the same time (would be nice) but, just need to be able to switch from one to other w/out restarting Alpha.

    Any suggestions? Comments?

    Thanks in advance for your help

    RE: Open Multiple *.adb files

    Carter,

    We run our entire agency(many different departments, related/unrelateed information) from one main menu database. This menu system allows us to "call" appropriate databases on a button push. We capture soecific user information at usersign-in, and "pass" that information to the succeeding databases.

    Basically, what you need to do is use the A5.load function. This function loads another database, closes the current database, but doesn't cloase Alpha5.

    This is the code under one button on our "Main Menu"

    dim aa as p
    aa = addin.variables()
    dim filename as C
    dim filename1 as C
    'FUNCTION "SETUP" INITIALIZES THE VARIABLES TO BE
    SENT TO THE CALLED APPLICATION.
    ' THE CHARACTER PARAMETER IS THE NAME OF THE
    ' CALLED APPLICATION AND IS WHAT IS
    ' PLACED INTO THE AA.BCBSS.WHERETO SUPER-
    ' GLOBAL VARIABLE

    'test to see if the user has rights to get here

    if exist(access,aa.bcbss.path+"\supply\allow.dbf","access")
    PleaseWait(.T.,"Loading Supply Room Menu...")
    setup("Supply Room","Main_Menu")
    callsub("supply\stockroom")
    traceln("what = "+aa.bcbss.subapp)
    'Open database:
    :A5.load(aa.bcbss.subapp)
    else
    ui_msg_box(aa.bcbss.agency+" - Security","You do
    NOT have Permission to go Here!")
    end
    end if

    The "PleaseWait" function puts up a message box telling the user that we haven't gone away. The "setup" function loads up some variables so that I know where I am going and where I came from. "Callsub" checks to see if my "called" application is shadowed, and creates the proper path for the :A5.load.

    "PleaseWait" is our modified version of Jerry Brightbill's function from the code Archive. "Setup" and "callsub" are functions I created to make my life easier.
    They are fairly specific to our use, but I will gladly send them to you if you think you need them.

      Carter,

      What do you mean by "3 seperate Alpha Projects"? Are you talking about 3 separate A5 applications/databases?

      If so, you can have as many A5 apps open as your computer will allow. Action scripting contains a script for opening 'outside applications'. I would think this is would work.

      Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

        You can have three separate instances of A5 running, one for each adb if you want. From the contolpanel, select "tools" from the menu and then "create shortcut". Do it for each adb.

          Hello All:

          Thanks for the help. Had to put on a different hat for a little while and am now getting back to the project. THANKS for the ideas I'll try them and post results soon.

          Answers: Yes it's several applicataions, each with it's own tables, reports, scripts ect.

          I know that we can have multipul copies running at the same time. The issue is with the users. The keyboard to human interface keeps acting up.
