Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field Rule Posts

As I understand field rule posting...

If the rules are set to 'undo on delete'. That is to say, if the target field was blank prior to the post - filled in during post operation -then when the posting table's record was deleted, the target field would again be blank.

The post rules on all three fields is 'Replace' and 'Undo on delete'. It's not working. I've done number of similar posts in A4 and A5 ver 4.5 and they worked every time. Maybe V5 is a one-way deal. Anyone know?

    I've attached a sample.

    Thanks in advance

    RE: Field Rule Posts

    Look at it this way:

The table from which you are posting is often called the Transaction table.

The table to which you are posting is often called the Target table.

The posting rule, as you probably understand, is put on the Transaction table's field. If you delete the transaction record, the total in the target table's field is adjusted.

    Hope that helps.

      RE: Field Rule Posts

      Hi Steve:

I understand. For the sake of argument, assume that my 'Gives post' table is the transaction table and my 'Gets_Post' is the target.

The transaction table posts quite nicely to the target. When a transaction record is deleted, however, the post is left undisturbed on the target. Did you try the sample? I understand the concepts its just that Alpha is not performing as advertised or as he has in many versions of A4 and in V5-4.5.

The point is.... It isn't friggin working as I see it.

      Thanks

      Ken

Re: Field Rule Posts undo on delete

I have run into the same problem. Earlier versions work just fine. I even re-created tables from scratch using identical structure and field rules from an earlier version - it just won't work. The "no" has no effect - it reverts to "yes" even when "no" is selected. Ever find a solution other than using the older version?

I don't have to ask if you know how to search... Nice job finding a 5 year old post.

I don't even know if this is an issue in the latest version (v9). I rather doubt it.

Are you currently using A5v5? If you're on the latest patch of A5v5, there is nothing else to do.... except possibly try the latest a5v9.

Re: Field Rule Posts undo on delete

            Glenn,

I don't think the "undo on delete" feature of the post field rule is intended to work with "replace" posts. Where is Alpha supposed to get the new "replacement" field value when you delete the transaction record? How does Alpha "know" that the field value in the master table was empty before the most recent post?
