Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re.Developer

    Hi Everybody
I am a doctor by profession. What started as a desire to develop a database program for my patient data resulted in ending up buying alpha five v5.0, susan bush's books and manuals from pace training. I am learning the software yet, but its such a wonderful software, and such a lovely community on the message boards, u guys are very helpful to the alpha five users.
I was wondering that in next 3 -4 months, when I am more comfortable with alpha five, can I develop applications with alpha five and sell it as a runtime? Do you need to have a degree to become a developer? What are the requirements to become a developer to sell applications based on alpha five.

ALpha five does not have a presence in India, here and I would like to launch alpha five here, let people know more about this wonderful program.

"can I develop applications with alpha five and sell it as a runtime?" - you have to buy the runtime engine application as well

"Do you need to have a degree to become a developer?" - no

"What are the requirements to become a developer to sell applications based on alpha five" - find a customer willing to pay you
    There can be only one.

      RE: Re.Developer

There are no official requirements for developing and selling applications in A5. Unofficially, you should be prepared for users that (a) will always want something a little different than what you developed, (b) think every change is a trivial change even though you know it might take 100 hours, (c) do things with/to your program that you would never have expected, and (d) probably a few other issues I've forgotten. It's always amazing to see the ways users can find to "destroy" what you thought was a well running program.

Also, be aware that a multi-user application and/or networked app will have other issues that never come up with single user apps.

For what it's worth, I've been developing databases for over 10 years and I still learn something new every day.

        Thanks Guys
I had bought the runtime also with alpha five v5.0 Its just that I would love to develop pragrams and sell the applications too. I'll get back to you guys, once I feel I am ready for commercial ventures, ( to help me find customers).

I hope 5 months is a reasonable time for a learning curve.

          Hello Alok Modi:

Five - Six months might be a reasonable time period to learn Alpha Five if you have an extensive database background. And that's a very big if.

In relative terms, Alpha Five is definitely much easier to learn and use then it's competitors. However, even with A5, learning and understanding database theory is still the key to developing sound applications. Alpha Five provides the easy to use components, but that isn't enough if you don't understand the underlying theory.

In my experience, and I've heard the same from others, this a never ending process that can take at least 2 or 3 years before you really have a good grasp on what you're doing. But thats only the beginning, the learning process is continuous.

I've been praised and condemned by others on this forum for criticizing new Alpha users, who don't even understand the basics of the program, yet they are trying to build and sell A5 applications to customers. If that isn't bad enough, they try to use the fine people on this wonderful forum to help them build the databases they don't understand.

IMHO, they are dishonest people who can ruin the reputation of this excellent product. In addition, I think they are immoral opportunists who are perpetrating a fraud upon their clients. At least you acknowledge that you are just starting and have a lot to learn. You set up a time frame you think is reasonable, however, I think you'll need more than 5 months. But who knows, give it a try and see what happens.

            Hi Alok,

Reading your message an earlier experience I had in my life just popped up.

Once I did a course of half a year trying to learn first medical aid. Then, after the whole six months the guys at the exam told me when I would pass the exam, my only gained right would be to declare death on a patient when the head was separated from the body with a distance of at least half a meter ! So that brought me back on my feet...

And I had clear visions of me doing open hart surchery...
How difficult could it be? You see it on TV every day....

Okay, I know what you say: you could not do the open hart thing, but you learned what to do to help people in a needy situation.

That's true, but that is something else as making it your profession.

What I mean is, if you ask me, make it your hobby, enjoy it, learn from your mistakes, get better in it, but stay a doctor in medicine !
Otherwise, I will reconsider the open hart thing....

Hope you don't take offense in this, none was intended !

            Kind regards,

            Marcel

              My God
              Such hatred for doctors!!!
But I appreciate your concerns and the love for this product. I don't blame you. the product is so good. And I didn't mean to sound egoistic, it was my dream to ALSO become a developer and I WILL and I plan to get you guys to acknowledge me as your colleague, come what may, AND I will continue to practice medicine.

I know it might take more than two years, so what!! I would love to learn and continue learning, I am 11 years post my specialisation and yet learning. Every patient teaches you something new as does everyday in life.

Thanks for the encouragement, Robert and Marcel.
I basically started this thread just to know if I needed any legal qualifications for this. I did not know that this would excite so many sentimental responses.
              Thnaks guys

I love your postive attitude. Combine that with your enthusiasm and I'm confident you will become a "Master Alpha Programmer".

Don't feel too bad. One of the best (if not THE best) Alpha programmers around is Dr. Peter Wayne.

A good way to really learn how to program for others would be to write an application that would be used in your office, especially by your secretaries and related staff. And get it to the point that not only is it required usage, but you actually depend on its reliability for critical data.

Until you write an app that others use, you cannnot possible appreciate how difficult it can be to ensure that they cannot mess up the data and/or enter invalid data.

                      Hi Dr. Alok,

Well, I did not mean to give you that feeling!
I just wanted to throw in some humor.......

                      I don't see why you couldn't become a programmer.
You certainly have the educational basics on board, and a product like Alpha will make it become even more possible.

                      Hmm.
I can start practicing the open heart thing on frogs, can't I ? :-)

                      Kind regards,
