Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creating Envelopes

I need some help in creating envelopes.

I can go through the genie with no problem. But when I try to print the envelopes, they are too high. I cannot seem to get them to print properly no matter what I try to do.
Also, when I try to do a print preview, the layout is always off center and I have to adjust that too.

When I go to change the margins, I show that the size of the page size is a standard 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, instead of the size of the envelope that I want.

When I create the envelope and select the size I want, why doesn't A5 automatically set the page size to the size of the envelope that I want?

    Appreciate your help.

    A frustrated envelope creator

    RE: Creating Envelopes

If you study your envelope in the design mode, you will see that Alpha considers an envelope to be a single "label" on an 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. Thus no change in page size.

If you specify the correct settings in the design genie for printer feed orientation, etc. the envelope should print just fine.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Creating Envelopes

I know this thread is old but I have this same problem except I can get the envelopes to print fine but when I change the page or label size the information on the envelope is not visible in the preview. I am trying to make it so the user does not need to go into the printer settings everytime they want to print a group of labels. I tried going into the label properties to save the printer setup information but that yeilds the same result, no info on the label.

Better post a sample illustrating the problem with instructions.

          Re: Creating Envelopes

I will describe in better detail. I create an envelope using the label geinie. It will print perfect if all I do is set the printer to print from the bypass tray onto an envelope. So all I am doing is changing the input tray and paper size.

Now if I try to go into the label properties and save the printer settings that I mentioned above, when the envelope is previewed there is nothing on the envelope.

Alpha has the page size set as 8.5 X 11 and not A10 envelope 4.125 X 9.5. I selected the proper size in the envelope geinie. Why does it still show the page as 8.5 X 11?

I was able to duplicate this error in the Alpha Sports when making a label. It all works fine untill you try to change the label (envelope) properties..... I have attached the alphasports example. In the labels section the label named "messed up envelpoe" is the non working one with printer settings and the "works" one is the one without printer settings. Thank you.

For some reason our printer does not like being told it is printing on an 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper and really printing on an envelope. It causes it to jam. The goal of saving the printer properties is so the users do not have to mess with changing the tray location and the paper size when they go to print. I could be missing something here but it seems to me like Alpha has the capabilities to do this. Unless it just does not like our printer. If it treats envelopes like an 8.5 X 11 still then I guess I am asking an erroneous question. I thought maybe something might have changed or updated from when this thread was posted using V5. I guess I do not understand why it would treat an envelope like a sheet of paper... It is an envelope. I like alpha much better than access so far and I know if access can do what I am trying to do Alpha 5 should be able to.

              thank you for your time

Saved printer settings should not affect the label layout. That is when I am having a problem. I do not change the page size just what the label is printing on in the printer settings in the label properties. That is when nothing displays on the label,

Nevermind I found a work around. If you create your envelope as a letter alpha five works perfectly with the saved print settings. Thank you for taking the time to help again stan.

Glad you got it working as you wanted. Sometimes just tossing things back and forth leads to some resolution or understanding of what can be done (and what can't).
