Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Backup/Restore

I would like to backup my DB at work and do some changes at home and then restore ONLY the forms, reports etc. the next day. The FAQ's show the extensions to use - are they up to date for V5 and the only ones I need?

    Thanks
    Alan

    RE: Backup/Restore

Any easier way to do this is to open Windows explorer.

Make sure you have it set so that the date/time appear when you open the folder with your files. Click the "Date Modified" header (If not using WinXP the header may be slightly different)

Now, all your files will be sorted by date/time. The files that changed will be at the top of the list, use copy/paste or whatever you use to move files around....beats relying on memory for the file types, etc.

      RE: Backup/Restore

      Alan,
When in the control panel, look under tools, backup/restore.

The backup/restore will allow all files, data files only, application files only, or any you select. Take a look at the files tab. If you set up a backup the way you want at work, save it you can run it from a button if desired. You can also restore just the files you want, all, data, app, or any you select. A button can run the restore also if desired.

Backup the app files only at work, restore the app files only at home, when through, backup the app files at home, restore at work.

      Hope this helps some,
      Phil

        RE: Backup/Restore

Phil....Thanks for the help. To backup only the app files, I should copy everything except the .asx, .dbf, .cdx, .fpt, .mpx and .muf files. Is this correct?

          RE: Backup/Restore

          Alan,

I think your working to hard :)

          Follow along with this procedure.

          Open the control panel
          Select Tools from the menu
          Select Backup/Restore Database
Select from the sub menu Backup Database
A window opens up. On the window there are two tabs
          Backup and Files
          Select Files
Click on the button labled Mark Files
          Another sub window opens.
          Select Application Files Only
This will unselect all of the data files for you, leaving just the app files selected.
          Click OK
This returns you to the backup tab. Look over the list and you will see which files will be backed up and which will not.
          Select the Backup button.

If desired, you can name the backup and save it.

The restore window also has a Files tab. It works the same way as above only I don't think you can save a restore.
Files, Mark Files, application files only.

There is a good listing in the chm help file on file types, and what they are for. Search using File Types and look for Alpha Five File Types.

          Hope this helps some.

          Phil

            RE: Backup/Restore

            Alan

It all depends on what is changed in the application. You'll need to provide that intelligence to the backup routine. There is no set routine that will handle all cases.

The idea about using the windows directory listing sorted on data modified is a good way to see what files are changed. You then need to decide how to move that file into place in another database. There is no substitute for knowing exactly how files are changed and why.

If an index is added or changed the .cdx file needs to be included. If a field is added or changed, the .dbf and/or .fpt is changed. But all contain or are relevant to the data in the table. So a rebuild of indexes might be needed after a .cdx change.

Also there are functions to change a table that can be used instead of replacing the .dbf and .fpt files.

table.Add_Fields() is one of many ways that you can change a table with a function.

            The general guidelines are:

            1. Backup (or zip up) the target database/directory.
            2. Zip up the new files and move unto the target computer.
            3. Put the new files into place.
            4. Run any conversion scripts.
            5. Rebuild any changed indexes.
            6. Test.

another possibility is to use a usb drive to copy the folder from one machine to another.
