Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    auto incrementing not working

This is a puzzler. The auto increment field rule is in place to increment a character field with the value 3-1197 in the last physical record. Rather than creating the next record with the value of 3-1198 in that field, it gives 000000. It used to work properly in Alpha Five v3.2 but broke when updating to A5V5.

Please, if you have any idea of what's wrong, or where to look for what's wrong, let me know.

    Just created a table... auto-increment .... set a value of 3-1197

    incremented just fine. See attachment.

Is your last physical record really 3-1197 (do a show all to make sure your view isn't filtered)
    There can be only one.

Look to see what is the maximum value in the field. Version 5 isn't as concerned with the last value in the field as it is with the largest value. Sounds like you have a 9-9999 type value somewhere else.

Also make sure that the value is right justified in the field. That can cause seemingly unexplainable problems later.

          Hi All,

I am also having trouble with auto-incrementing y is the
first number assigned 0 then record 2 is assigned 1 and so on
the 0 for the first record caused me 3 HR's of aggravation
till I figured out the trouble now I need to come up with a fix for this to make sure the first record is not a 0

            Ray,

            Here's what I've discovered...

An Auto-Increment Character field with a default value of "00001" for example will always create the first record as "00000".

Why you ask...I have no idea, but here is what I do to overcome the problem.

As soon as I create a new auto-increment field, I immediately open the default form and create two new records.

The first will be assigned "00000" and the second will be assigned "00001".

Next I delete the first record and pack the table. All subsequent new records seem to auto-increment fine.

            Hope this helps.

              Hi Louis,

Thank you for your reply, trouble on the horizon with this
approach when all records are deleted or purged to another table it will go back to 0000 I think this is a bug and wish Alpha would fix-it because this has been the behavior
as far back as I can remember I am an old DOS user of theirs not sure it goes back that far but it is close.

                Ray,

If you set the default value of the auto increment field in the field rules to "000001", that is the number it will start with and reset to when all records are purged.

                I hope this helps.

                  Hi Michael,

Thank you for the reply, I did what you said and when I first go into enter mode to enter the record the first
record shows 000001 but as soon I save the record BAM
                  it saves as 00000

I have tried everything set default at the start of data entry set default at end of data entry and so on NOTHING
                  WORKS---BUG-BUG-BUG Selwyn please fix this.

Rather than getting aggravated, use the approach mentioned by Louis. Simple and it works. I agree, it may be a bug, but it is one easily overcome.

                      Ray,

I'm not seeing a problem here.

Do you have the auto increment field indexed, ascending, all?

Compare your setup to this sequence:

                      1) define two field table
                      2) field one is an IDNUM, char type, 6 wide, indexed ascending.
                      3) field two is a NAME, char type, 30 wide, indexed, ascending.
                      4) Define IDNUM as AutoInc in field rules.
                      5) On the Data Entry tab for AutoInc in field rules specify a simple default expression like this: "000001" (Notice I included quote marks).
                      6) Specify that the default value is inserted when data entry begins
                      7) Set skip true for the IDNUM field, too.
                      8) Save field rules
                      9) open default form for the empty table.
                      10) cursor jumps to NAME field, insert a sample name
                      11) as soon as data entry begins the default value appears in the IDNUM field.
                      12) save the record (F9)
                      13) begin another (Ctrl-E)
                      14) insert a new sample name; notice that the next value
                      is inserted in IDNUM field
                      15) save record
                      16) close form
                      17) dble click table in Control Panel and examine records in the default browse.

At the end of this sequence my first record in the table begins "000001", not "000000" as you are reporting.

How is your initial sequence different?

                        Ray,

Your description suggests that your default value won't fit in the available field width. This would cause an initial 00000 value, for example, if you're trying to insert a 6 character wide string into a 5 char wide field. -- tom

When I firs go to enter a record your right does show 1
however as soon as I save the first record it changes the value to 000000 then the next record becomes 1 and the next record becomes 2 and so on.

My setup is just like you said except their are no quotes
around the number because I am using numeric not character

I have seen autoincrement work correctly, as in your example, but I have also seen the same results as Ray. I don't know why and haven't been able to duplicate it often enough to see a pattern. Most of the time it works correctly.

I also had problems using a numeric autoincrement field. Try changing your default to a conditional default, enter 1 in the default column and in the condition column enter fieldname=0 (your name of the autoincrement field not the word fieldname).
