Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime window size

    Ok I have spent 73 minutes scanning the archives and reading some very interesting posts related to the runtime. However none of them addressed my very simple question... so here it is:

    First of all (demonstrating what I already know) the forms can be set so that they cannot be resized (and they can be preset to a specific size). Very cool. However the runtime doesn't like it when you don't allow them to be resized... fine...

    My question is: Can the RUNTIME be set to a specific sized window? and can it be set so that it can not be resized? Also in a competing basic language it is possible to "get" the screen size and calculate the appications position on the screen (a slick idea that seems underutilized in most apps). I haven't been able to find anything in the documentation regarding the runtime and this question... I was just wondering if something in the autoexec script could be jiggered to do this.

    Why?? (for the eternally curious)... Well it's just a cosmetic issue. I was hoping (not demanding or requiring) that the end product would be unrecognizable from an application written in say VB or Delphi (or libertybasic!) etc... Having all that "grey" space isn't a problem, it's just not visually appealing... It lacks that clean professoinal - off the shelf - new car smell :-)

    Any thoughts or comments are appreciated...

    RE: Runtime window size

    BTW: I'm aware the Runtime can be Maximized (and minimized - does anyone use minimized?). I want the opposite... I want the Runtime to give my little 'form window' a great big BEAR hug!! I want it to resize to the form (not the other way around which I'm aware is possible).

      RE: Runtime window size

      Joseph,

      What might work for you is making your application into a SDI(Single Document Interface)

      Goto the pull down menu of the control panel. File-"database properties, select a startup form and then check the box marked "Maximize the form (within the Alpha Five Window) then check the next checkbox that appears.

      You will have to probably redesign your form, but I think it will be what your looking for.

        RE: Runtime window size

        Thanks Scott,

        I did that but it does just the opposite of what I'm thinking (ok maybe not the opposite but not what I want). It does create the "look and feel" of an out of box application but my application is small in size (and scope). So it just hangs out in the upper left hand corner of the Runtime. It doesn't look bad mind you, just not very refined. I'm considering as a compromise to just widen it and add some more graphics. That will probably be a workable idea. I was just wondering if anyone else thought this was a problem and maybe created a solution. Of course perhaps most others are making larger applications than I do. My app is just a glorified calculator that "save's" the data (thus the database part).

          RE: Runtime window size

          If you want your A5 window to be a certain size, put something like this in an autoxec script that runs on startup

          screen_width = ui_info(0)
          screen_height = ui_info(1)

          :A5.width = 800
          :A5.height = 600

          :A5.top = (screen_height - :a5.height)/2
          :A5.left = (screen_width - :a5.width)/2

          This will open the a5 window at 800 x 600 and center it in the screen. If you want your window to be bigger or smaller, just adjust the A5.width and height to what works. This works exactly the same in full or runtime versions.
