Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Calling any Alpha 5 Support staff

I raised a problem that I had under a previous post Titled BUG?

Although I have had a lot of replies to this post I still have not received any advice that answers my question.

A brief description of the problem:

I am trying to use the Tablemax function to return a value from an SQL linked Access table. The Tablemax function works when I use it without the filter argument but fails with an error message when I use the filter. Can anyone say categorically wether:-

    It's my lack of knowledge?
Theres a better way of doing this?
    I've found a bug?

I am getting extremely frustrated that I cannot get any further with this (I have spent about three weeks now, off and on, trying to resolve this issue)- the reason for purchasing Alpha 5 was its ease of use and power compared to Access.

Can anybody out there help me??

    Please!!!

What you are trying to do will not work. The solution is to import the Access data into a local Alpha Five table and then run the tablemax() function.

Well at least I know its not me thats doing something wrong!

Is there an alternative way to do this using the SQL Linked table?

RE: Calling any Alpha 5 Support staff

Having to import the table each time I want to know what the next Job number would be from the access db seems a long winded approach why doesn't the sql linked table work?

          Alastair,

I have no experience with odbc but maybe you could open the remote table, index it, and then filter it. If the index were inverted the highest idnumber would float to the top for the filtered subset, right? So, maybe you could fetch just the first record? -- tom

Why doesn't the Tablemax function work?

Thanks everyone for all your advice, it looks (at the moment) that what I want to do is much more complicated than I ever thought it would be using Alpha 5.

I am running out of time to research this problem any further - will just have to do it manually for now.

What I can't understand with all of this is that the Tablemax() function works fine the way I want it to with an SQL linked table up until the point I use a filter - the filter is part of the function, so can anyone answer the question that has been frustrating me for 4 weeks now and explain to me why this function does not work correctly when used with a filter argument???

RE: Why doesn't the Tablemax function work?

              Alastair,

You've asked the same question several times and no one has ever answered. It's possible no one knows and that researching it would take a lot of time. I see two possible explanations: (a) Alpha Five improperly passes the query filter to the ODBC driver; or (b) the ODBC driver doesn't support this functionality in the first place. My guess is that it's the latter, but you aren't looking for guesses. If you really, really must have an answer you could start reading the Microsoft manuals for the MDAC implementation of ODBC for Access tables. Perhaps you'll discover that this particular implementation of ODBC doesn't support the kind of query tablemax() is capable of doing easily with native DBF tables.

RE: Why doesn't the Tablemax function work?

Yes, Thanks Tom I am starting to appreciate this is a lot more complicated than I first thought!

I think Alpha 5 spoils us! It makes me think that I can accomplish tasks which would have taken me hours/weeks of programming with products such as Access, in a couple of mouse clicks (e.g. date fields with a calendar!)

I wasn't trying to annoy anyone by asking the question again I just thought it must be my lack of knowledge that was letting me down and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Much as it pains me I must admit defeat on this for the time being and maybe look at it again when I have more time on my hands.

I would have liked to know maybe from someone who is developing the Alpha 5 program (I don't know if they read this forum or not) if this is a bug or if this command was just not meant to be used in the way I am trying to use it?

You do get an award for persistence. There is limited functionality for ODBC connections in versions prior to 6. Apparently tablesum() is one gives limited meaning and purpose. I can't speak to whether it will work in version 6, but I would guess that a way to got the information that you want would be available in version 6.

I respond to one of your postings previously and noted that the coordination of ids between two databases would take much more work than just using the tablesum() function.

I hope that you have found a solution.

ODBC support in Version 5 is very limited. Unfortunately, If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. We have spent a lot of time working on the ODBC support in version 6, and it is much much better.

Al, yes I realise there would be a lot more work to do to get this to work how I wanted, but this was my starting point and I haven't even managed to get this working how I wished!

The tablemax() function did actually work (to a certain extent) but unfortunately not being able to use the filter argument has shot this idea down in flames.

If Version 6 is going to solve this problem, do you know when it will be available, how much to upgrade etc...

I am a bit dissapointed that I have been unable to achieve what I wanted with Alpha 5 (but I am very impressed with the package as a whole)

Aaron, is there another way? Or do I have to upgrade to get this functionality?

If the upgrade is the only option, I am a bit dissapointed as I have only just purchased Alpha 5 - didn't see version 6 on the webpage when I ordered!

If you look under vbscript you would be able to do this easily. There are many scripts already available on the internet. You have to use the sys_open command to open the .vbs script but it works very well and is very realiable. Jack
