Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to tackle "No records in query" ?

    I am struggling with an event in a menustructure.
    Part of the menu structure is a query that runs when a user pushes a button.
    All works as it is supposed to, except that whenever the query finds no records it returns the A5 standard error message "no records in query".
    When it does, the menu sequence of commands is interrupted and A5 leaves the user at a dead end.
    I mean the user pushes the button where action scripting tells it to close the current form, perform the query, open another form and go from there.
    When the query finds no records, the form is closed, the command sequence is interrupted so the new form is not opened and in that way the app has disappeared for the user.
    How can you intercept this standard errormessage or how to work around it best ?

    Greetings,

    Marcel

    RE: How to tackle

    What many will do is run the query in xbasic, check the record count, and if it's zero branch to a different sequence in the script so the user never sees the query run.

    This sequence is often done before running a report for the same reason. If the report is filtered, there's no reason to run it if the return set is empty.

    An example of this is shown in the Xbasic Reference Manual in the discussion of index.records_get()

        Another way to check the records that will be returned is to use the built in function

        a5_get_records_in_query()

        If you type it into the interactive window or code editor, it will show the syntax, which is the same as a query. It returns the number of records that fit the filter expression.

          RE: How to tackle

          It may depend on a number of factors--but I solved this in one of my applications by advising the user to press the tab key if no records are found. It will then tab to a button that resets the search function. It's a little dirty but it has worked. "If no records are found, press TAB"

            RE: How to tackle

            I do something like this:
            [b]
            tbl = table.current()
            query.description = "Time Sheet"
            query.order = "query.filter = "NAME = VAR->Name .and. DATE = VAR->Date"
            query.options = ""
            Q = tbl.query_create()
            '************************No of records
            nrecs = Q.records_get()
            IF nrecs = 0
            Q.drop()
            ui_msg_box("Null Query","There are no records in the Query" ,UI_INFORMATION_SYMBOL)
            END
            end if

              Thanks for asking this questiom Marcel,

              I asked this same question about a year and a half ago. Got some good answers back then, but I really like all the responses that you got this time. Will probably update a copule of spots in my application I made, with these neat ideas.

              Thanks All.
