Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Garbage on forum

I am getting garbage when I try to look at answers on the Alpha forum. When I click on a subjct (under A5V5, A4v7 or whatever) about half the time I get something like the below.

    HTML/834748DHDHGEP2487VNNSLREU38783MNKWEUIDJDM632j2454dshfdjhfiueldnflfldkdjdjdfjeuidfnflfjkej##@&ldlem@!--=4384kfk

I think you get the idea. The output is usually about 10 lines long. At the end of the about, there may be the correct answer, but most of the time not. Sometimes the
icon "http:/solutions ALPHA software" is displaces several places. As I said sometime it works, sometimes it doesnot.

The Old computer is ok, no problem. Both computers are Gateway with enough memory. Old = 256 MB and 20 GB and the new computer is 512 MB and 200 GB. Can someone please help me?

But, I am using AOL on both computers. However, on the old computer (the one that is OK), I am using AOL Ver 6.0
while on the new computer Iam using AOL 9.0. Maybe that is the problem?

                RE: Garbage on forum

No doubt. Personally, I think AOL is in a no-win situation. They are desperately hanging onto their proprietary technology, despite the fact that it is a generic browser world. If they go that way, they loose because then there is no reason to then stay w. them. If the dont change, people will more & more go the way of the world. Either way, theyre finished. They keep mucking around w. their code, so they are no longer in tune w. (in this case) Phorum technology. It will become harder & harder for AOL to keep up and stay w. the MS freight train. Then again, MS itself is very slowly and gradually being eroded by Linux. Anyway, Ill get off my soapbox (for now).

                    RE: Garbage on forum

Sorry Dave, I'm not a Linux guy. But Peter Wayne has an article on his website on how to set up a server running A5. Linux is successful on the server level because it is very very stable and every major software corporation that is in competition w. MS supports it. But it is not user friendly at root. Windows is still far easier to deal w. for the average person, which is why it remains so popular for personal and business use. But as I said, Linux is making strides...slow & steady wins the race...

                      Just my two cents worth----
I browse this forum using AOL 9.0. Works perfectly...no garbage.

                        Thanks Peter.

I'll try your suggestion about Peter Waynes sight.

I instructed dos many years ago ans still remember what it was like at root level there. I am not sure I would like to go back to that. I also taught Windows in the early days and was considered an authority on 3.11. Maybe I can get along in linux?? We will see.

Do you think one would be better off putting linux on a stand alone machine for learning purposes??

                          Just a thought about AOL.

I have installed software all over FL and one of my major problems was AOL. The same problem was not always occurring with each machine, but the root frequently was aol proven.

you may try starting aol if that is you access to the net and then shrink it. Open IE after shrinking aol and see if that helps.

                          Good Luck.

                              Daniel,

Suggest you get tech support help from AOL. Sounds like a faulty installation, or maybe some setting within AOL's browser that's mistranslating the Alpha message board web pages.
