Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    update child records

    I have an order entry form with an embedded browse of child records. When a condition changes, I wish to change one of the fields (columns) for every child record in the browse (resetting to a default value created at the initial entry). I cannot find a command to accomplish this and I feel as though I must be missing it somewhere. I reviewed past message posts and found one message which appears similar to my needs:

    Msg ID: 39150
    Subject: RE: Update records
    Author: Al Buchholz
    Date: 08-12-2003 12:49 PM
    File: Test01.zip (26,216 bytes)

    The problem is I am using the home edition which will not allow me to review the data created by the professional edition.

    Any help appreciated.

    Yup, now that you've identified the problem, you've discovered a good reason to order the full version.

      RE: update child records

      Geoff,

      This is a little different situation, but it should give you some ideas. In this case, if there are backorders on an order, the script creates a new header record, then creates detail records for each line that has backorders. This demonstrates use of open_session() and table.current(2). In your case, you would use target.change_begin() instead of target.enter_begin().

      Dim shared vOrderId as C
      dim vMsg as C
      dim vAnsr as N
      Dim target as P
      Dim source as P
      Dim vOrderID as C
      if Parentform:TotalBackOrd.value"0
      vMsg="There are backorders on this order."+chr(13)
      vMsg=vMsg+"Do you want to convert them to a new order?"
      vAnsr=ui_msg_box("BACK ORDERS",vMsg,UI_YES_NO)
      end if

      if vAnsr=UI_YES_SELECTED
      target=table.current(1)
      s=set.open_session("orders.set")
      source=s.ordrheader
      vOrderID=target.order_id
      source.index_primary_put("order_id")
      source.fetch_find(vOrderID)
      target.enter_begin()
      target.record_clone(source)
      target.backorder=.t.
      target.fromorder=vOrderID
      target.enter_end(.t.)
      target=table.current(2)
      source=s.ordrdetail
      source.fetch_first()
      while .not.source.fetch_EOF()
      if source.qty_backord"0
      target.enter_begin()
      target.item_desc=source.item_desc
      target.order_id=source.order_id
      target.comp_id=source.comp_id
      target.product_id=source.product_id
      target.qty_ordered=source.qty_backord
      target.qty_delivered=0
      target.list_price=source.list_price
      target.discount=source.discount
      target.consigned=source.consigned
      target.comments=source.comments
      target.enter_end(.t.)
      end if
      source.fetch_next()
      end while
      s.close()
      end if

      Happy programming.

        RE: update child records

        Geoff,

        The attached zip file contains a version of the sample
        database you found in the earlier thread. I've
        created it using the Home Edition, so you should be
        able to work with it just fine.

        Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

        When the database is opened you'll find one form.

        The OnDepart event on the DESC field calls a Saved
        Update operation depending on the value of the DESC field
        at the time. This op changes the values in a single
        field in all linked child table records.

        This sounds like just what you need to see, if you
        prefer using a saved update op to do the child table
        updates.
