Autoexec help

Or maybe it is a syntax thing (although it checks). I am trying to initialize a variable, vnInvNo, in the autoexec code, but it is not working. Here is the code:
t=table.open("take_off_results",FILE_RW_SHARED)
t.recalc_calcFields()
t.fetch_first()
while .not. t.fetch_eof()
evaluate_template("dim global vnInvNo as n")
evaluate_template("vnInvNo=" + t.Invoice_Number)
t.fetch_next()
end while
t.close()
end

The reason for this is that there are two methods of invoicing product (one is user entered, the other is the result of certain calculations based on user entered room dimensions), but it has been requested that the invoice numbering system be sequential regardless of which method is being used. I need to set an initial value, then increment the value of vnInvNo each time either invoice is generated and set the value of Invoice_Number to the variable. If only I could get the code to work.........

This should be equivalent to your posted code, whether the logic is what you intended is another question.

"each time either invoice is generated" - this has nothing to do with the autoexec, that fires only when the app is started.

Thanx. As for the actual assigning of the invoice numbers, I have a routine set up for that - I realize that the autoexec fires only at start. Again, thank-you.

I really see nothing wrong with your original code as posted. Did the alternative perform as desired?

Actually, no. I inserted it into the autoexec code, saved, shut down (both A5 and computer) and restarted. First thing I did was go to the interactive window and type:

?vnInvNo

and got

error: vnInvNo not found

I also added some code - I put the loop back in as not every Take_Off_Results record will have an invoice number - and ran it again. Same results. I also tried to dim this variable in the variable definition window, with a lookupn expression as the initial value (lookupn("",TAKE_OFF_ID,"Invoice_Number","take off results","take off id") but it kept telling me that the expression was no good - either TAKE_OFF_ID not found or when I retyped it TAKE_OFF_RESULTS-"TAKE_OFF_ID, I got: field not recognized.

seems to work.

Stick a debug(1) in right before the

t=table.open("take_off_results",FILE_RW_SHARED)

and step through it. You may have a conflict in trying to open the table, recalcing, etc.

The problem lies below.

t=table.open("take_off_results",FILE_RW_SHARED)

The program was not recognizing the table name with the underscores in it.
