Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Latest Patch

I have 30 people in my office using runtime. On Saturday I sent out email message to them to run the latest patch which I had copied to our network. For most of them the patch download worked correctly. However, several people got an error message in the middle of the download. The message was "'\a5im.exe' could not be opened. Please check that your disk is not full and that you have access to the destination directory. Access is denied."

For one of the people that got this message, I uninstalled runtime, reinstalled it, and restarted the computer. I then reran the patch and got the same error message.

When I open A5 and go to help and "about alpha5" the version build is 1506 and the systems addins build is 1058, so I think that the patch worked. Can someone at Alpha assure me that this is the case?

Also is this error message something that I should be worried about? When I went into the program files for A5 I couldn't find an "a5.exe" file, is this a problem?

    Thanks for your help,
    Kristi

    RE: Latest Patch

I'd try reinstalling the patch again and see if you get the same error.

There will never be an a5.exe file...it's Alpha5.exe

        RE: Latest Patch

I've had the same problem. It's easily resolved by copying the update file to the local computer, and then running it, rather than running it from a network location.

I know this is a minor issue, but it would be nice if Alpha would make the patches executable from any location, so we didn't have to go to the bother of copying it to each machine.

As soon as we can reproduce this problem, we will fix it. I install my patches from a network location every single time, and have never had trouble. In fact, we all do at Alpha, so we're a bit baffled as to why some people are having trouble with this.

            RE: Latest Patch

Thanks for the information Nathan. What is odd about this is that out of almost 30 people, only 5 have said that they got the error message.

You are right, it would be nice to have the patch work properly from a network location.

            Thanks again,
            Kristi

              Aaron,
Thanks for working on fixing this. I also installed the patch from a network location without any problem, but I have both the full version and runtime. Would that make a difference?

It seems like the people with runtime only are having this problem.

              Hope this helps,

                Krista

A similar issue was discussed in another thread last week. There are a number of issues, such as user rights, etc. Also, Selwyn reported that they had found a problem if the server only had runtime and an updated patch was to be listed on the website. I can't confirm that, but you might try downloading the current patch again ansd see if that makes a difference.

You may also want to look at this thread from 2002 where the same issue was addressed.

                  Jerry,

                  Thanks for the response.

I don't think that the information from Selwyn matches my situation, "that they had found a problem if the server only had runtime and an updated patch was to be listed on the website". Each of my users has runtime installed on their c drive, and I copied the patch on Saturday, February 14th to our network.

I'd be happy to provide any additional information to Aaron and the rest of the Alpha staff if it helps them.

As an aside, I really appreciate all the help from everyone on the message board and all the Alpha staff. Knowing that I can get help from so many experienced people makes me more confident that I can use this program in my business.
