Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Parent Record Only Browse Problem

If I toggle (F8) between a form and a default browse table, I will get the record I selected on the browse when I return to the form.

BUT... if I set the default browse table to PARENT RECORDS ONLY and save it with the companion form, I get the first record in the set when I return to the form DESPITE any other record I selected in the browse.

    Any ideas??

RE: Parent Record Only Browse Problem

    More information,

It may help to know that the browse is pointing to a table the is the parent level of a set containing several child records. I am toggling between a parent level sub-form and a parent level browse table. I did ensure the form was not initiating any filters when I re-created this problem.

I'm not sure if there is a direct solution to your siuation, but as an option:

      1. How about toggling on the table level, rather than the set level?

      2. Would zoom to record do it for you - that works from browse to form (not the other way), but then you can close the form and return to your browse.

      3. Code a filter, or a simple fetch, in xbasic or maybe w. action scripting, when switching.

      4. ?

        Peter,

I'll explore your suggestions but I find it hard to believe that toggling between a form and a browse table with the option to select a record should be that complex. I really thought I was missing something obvious in Alpha5. I'm sure the Alpha people are tired of hearing how some things were done very simply in Alpha4. But I will admit Alpha4 lacked other significant logic that is available in Alpha5. Thanks. Deb Welch

RE: Parent Record Only Browse Problem

Deb - I have a form based on a set. I set for its companion browses a saved browse. The saved browse is set to show parents only. And its companion form is the form in question. F8 works perfectly - I can F8 to the browse, scroll up and down, and F8 back, and it goes to the correct record.

            Deb,

I think the problem is the subform. While your table is the parent in the subform, it's not the parent of the form from which you're toggling, right ?

Deb, I don't recall being able to use subforms with Alpha Four. Am I forgetting something basic? -- tom

RE: Parent Record Only Browse Problem

                Tom,

A4 might have called it something other than subform but the logic was similar. Anyway, the subform called demographic header was defined for seashore guests and the guest information form with both the header and the browse table was defined for seashore guests.

But, the solution I stumbled on when perusing this forum is this: toggle to the browse, select the record I want, hit F9 to save, toggle back to the form and VOILA!! there is the data I wanted to retrieve. Couldn't be simpler. But, since the save record icon in the browse was never highlighted it wasn't apparent that F9 could do the job. Funny - huh?

Thanks for your interest and advice. Deb
