Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Updating Two Fields From Another Table

Hi all you experts out there!

I just moved an A4 database into an A5 table. It converted OK except for two fields. The only truly unique identifier in the DB is record number.

I created a DBF of just the two fields I need to update in the new DBF and both the "Transactional" DBF and the "Master" are sorted by record number.

Does anyone know how I can do update the fields in the master from the transactional in this format? I looked in the Operations and tried to use a Genie, but I'm not familiar enough with all of this to get it done.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    George,

You're not painting a sharp enough picture for us.

Try describing what went wrong with the creation of the new table. Your DBF from Alpha Four could have simply been copied to the Alpha Five databased folder. No conversion should have been required. Why did two of your fields misbehave? If you don't know describe for us what values were present before, and what values are present now.

RE: Updating Two Fields From Another Table

OK. I have two A4 databases to pay direct mailing list invoices. In one of them, I used a function to fill in the List Broker field from a List Broker database based on the "Broker Code" field. Shown below:
      LOOKUPC("F",BROKER_COD,"Brkr_Name","brokers.dbf","Brokercode")

I was able to successfully convert records into this first A5 database. The second database only had "Brkr_Name"s in it. It did not lookup based on BROKER_COD. I created a BROKER_COD in the second DBF, but the field was all blank.

Somewhere along the line, I got the records into the second DBF, but without any BROKER_COD's or BRKR_NAMEs.

I have now created a two-column DBF which contains the data. I would like to post it to the second database based on record number, but I don't see that as an option in the Posting Genie.

To summarize: All I want to do is post the two fields in the "brk_updt" table to the same fields in "listpmt" table based on record number. Any thoughts?

Sorry for the confusion. That is just the kind of guy I am.

RE: Updating Two Fields From Another Table

Update: I changed the Field Rule that made the "Broker Name" a calculated field based on "Broker Code." I emptied the table and brought the data back in again.

I now have the "Broker Name" field populated, but I would like to update the "Broker Code" field so that I could turn the calculated field back on and keep the two DB's the same.

So, I still have the same question.

        Thanks,
        George

          Hi All,
I figured this out. I just put a field in both DBF's called Increment and made it a calculate field using the RECNO() field.

I'm sure this is a piece of cake to you programmers, but I'm actually a bit pleased with myself for finally figuring this out!

Bear in mind that recno() is not a static value. It is the nth record in that table in the order in which the data was entered. If you delete the 100th of 500 records, all records following 100 will now have a new record number. And if you archive the last 25, then the next recno() would be a duplicate of one in the archives.

I usually use something like customer number or clientid as my main linking field between tables, and insure that they are unique, as by either updating manually, with xbasic code, or using autoincrement.

Thanks for the important reminder, Martin.

Luckily, this was a one-time fix. I should probably delete that field now so that I won't be tempted to use it again.
