Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Image File Reference

Where do you store the image file reference?
(file pathname). I've created the table, scanned the image, but don't know how to make the link.

    Help would be much appreciated.

    RE: Image File Reference

May I first inquire whether you have noticed the search feature of this board? Searching for "image file reference" returned 94 hits. It is possible you might find the answer there.
    There can be only one.

      Stan,

I have trawled through alot of them, but I find that they are referencing more advanced issues than the simple one that I have. Being a new user to Alpha Five, I am on a steep learning curve, and being asked to deliver solutions very quickly. I occured to me that a straightforward question like mine might receive a straightforward answer, as I cannot find the answer in any documentation. The User Guide is very good, but as in most technical publiccations, seems to assume that you know everything about the product before you begin.

        RE: Image File Reference

Just asking, and I think I have provided straightforward advice to your posts in the past.

"I've created the table" - with a field defined in the structure as an "Image File Reference" data type? If so, open the table (form or browse) with the field visible, right click on the field and you'll see a context sensitive menu.
        There can be only one.

          RE: Image File Reference

          Patrick,

Along with Stan's good advise I will try to help you understand it somewhat easier.

A Image File Reference field does not store the image. It stores the path or link to the image.

Now, lets say you have images you want to make available to your data base. One good method is to create a subfolder with in your application folder to store these images. So you have the folder MYAPPLICATION and then the subfolder APPLICATIONPICTURES

When you scan the image, save it directly to APPLICATIONPICTURES or copy it there later(this is your choice)

Now, when you open your DB application and got to the record you want the picture linked to just right click on the IFR Field and you will see the menu Stan refered to.

Select "Change Image File Name" and navigate to your APPLICATIONPICTURES folder and select the picture.

I hope this helps a bit more.

          Scott
