Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Underscore in Variables being stripped

    This just started with the lastest build 1506_1058. I tried reverting to a previous version but it still does it.

    I have variables with underscores ie..cho_dateS etc...

    When I set the value for the variable A5 strips away the underscore..ie..chodateS.

    Is anyone else experiencing this?? I hope this is a bug, it would make the answer so much easier(not to mention someone elses problem ie. Alphas).

    check the rules for defining variables and see if you are violating same - I tried defining a global variable in autoexec for cho_date as date

    i then in interactive gave it date()

    when I checked it in the explorer it was still defined as cho_date

      RE: Underscore in Variables being stripped

      Hi

      Did a little more testing. The stripping only occurs when I edit a global variable from the code editor screen. I do this on a regular basis and it never happend before.

        I rarely use that method, but you are right. The toolbar runs a5_define_global_vars(), which does seem to strip undelines. I never noticed that before.

          A little testing shows that it worked in build 1498_1051, but fails in 1501_1052 and newer.

            Hi Gerry

            Thanks for you interest doing that extra testing.

            Hopefully it will be fixed in the next patch. I can manage without and considering I was the only one to report it, we can safely assume this was not a major tool for other developers.

              i can't repeat this problem.

              1 i when to the code editor.
              2 clicked the V icon on the toolbar to bring up the Global Variables screen
              3 defined a global variable to be initialized at startup called "company_name"

              a5 did not strip out the _.

              this dialog box will strip out characters that are not valid in variable names, but an underscore is valid.

              can you perhaps describe in more detail how i should reproduce the problem.

                Selwyn,

                While I cannot repeat the problem under the "Initialized at Startup" tab, it does remove the underscores under the "Variable List" tab. Give that a try.

                    RE: Underscore in Variables being stripped

                    I just checked this. Make a second variable so you can deselect the first and you will see the underscore in the variable list tab. You can also test this in the interactive window.

                    ?my_variable
                    = "billH

                    I set the variable up on the initialize at startup tab just as you describe.

                      Bill,

                      "...and you will see the underscore in the variable list tab."

                      When you see that underscore in the variable list tab can you edit that variable without the underscore disappearing?

                      If I have, say, 'V_TEST' in the variable list and I attempt to change it to 'V_TRIAL' via the edit button, it will show up as 'VTRIAL' on the list.

                        Hi Steve

                        This also happens if you try to set/change the value of a variable.

                        V_trial = "YES"

                        Edit the variable to

                        V_trial = "NO"

                        When you save the change it becomes

                        Vtrial = "NO"

                          Just to confirm:

                          The underscores are retained during an edit but I am using 1498.1051 so we are talking about apples and oranges here.

                          Sorry for any confusion.

                            Just to murky the water a little more. I have one computer running Win2000 Pro and it strips the underscore. Another computer running WinXP Home does not. A third computer running WinXP aso works correctly. All are running the latest build of A5. I didn't test Win98
