Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field rule limitations

I am trying to revamp a table that performs a lot of calculations. When I started this project and was totally in the dark, I set this up so that the the fields were set up as user entered fields and I used the send_keys command to tab thru the fields which would populate based on conditional default values I had defined. Now I am trying to move all these rules into calculated fields (changing the field designation itself) and am having success up to this point: several of the conditions are lengthy and when I combine all the different elements into a case() argument, not all of the command fits into the space. I did a look up and discovered that there is a character limitation for these field rules. Someone made reference about making a function of my calculation and placing the function in the field rule. How is this accomplished? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Chris,

In Alpha Five, you can create a user function in the code tab section.

Just click the New button, and select Function from the drop down. Then fill in the required info (function name, return type and optional input parameters). FInally, complete the function in the script editor. After that, you can reference the function name anywhere, providing you are using the same db.

For a little fuller explanation, convert your case statement to a case command structure

      select
      case

      case

      end select

then convert it to a function as mentioned like

      FUNCTION test AS N (parameter1,parameter2,parameter...)
test = 0 'set default return value
      select
          case cond1 = .t.
test = result of some computation
          case cond2 = .t.
test = result of some other computation
          case cond3
test = result of yet another computation
      end select
      END FUNCTION

Then the usage in your field rule would be

      test(value1,value2,value...)
      There can be only one.

            Stan,

Would you be able to clarify certain elements of:Then the usage in your field rule would be

test(value1,value2,value...)? Specifically, is this the exact wording? By saying value1, does the program pick the first true value?

              Chris,

You would be well advised to refer to the
Xbasic Referernce Manual and the section that
              describes Function (Page 80)

suppose your computation involves three field values

                fielda
                fieldb
                fieldc

                and the case conditions

                case a " b

                case b " c

                case c " a

The function, specifically without the computation results, would be

                FUNCTION test AS N (a as N,b as N,c as N)
test = 0 'set default return value
                select
                case a " b
test = result of some computation
                case b " c
test = result of some other computation
                case c " a
test = result of yet another computation
                end select
                END FUNCTION

                and the usage would be

                test(fielda,fieldb,fieldc)
                There can be only one.
