Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    tool bar question

    I have a custom toolbar.
    I have defined a button to get the next record in a set.
    Button action defined as:
    topparent.Show_All()
    topparent.fetch_next()
    However, it is fetching in record # order. I want it in Alpha order ( customers names)
    If I use the page down/up., it fetches in Primary index order. Which is set to Alpha order.
    How do I fix this?

    Jeff

    Fetch_next() uses the index or query in place when it is called. If you are using show_all(), that would indicate that you have a query in place. That command would remove the query. If you don't have a query, the the fetch_next() is all you need and the fetch will use the existing index or query. If you want to remove a query and fetch in a different order, then you would have to set the index to whatever index you want after the show_all().

        RE: tool bar question

        There is a built in action on the toolbar for moving forward or backwards one at a time, as well as going to first and going to last record. I find it easier to use the built in features on things like this, rather than building an xbasic command.

        You can allow the user to sort/index on any field, by also including the A/Z Sort and Z/A sort features. This allows the user to click on any field and then A/Z or index off that field. THen the forward " backward " will advance them in that order.

        The Filter function is also powerful. For example, I can sort on the city field and then find a certain city, such as Houston. By selecting the city field while "Houston" is displayed, and then clicking on the filter tool, it will filter my records to only records where city=houston. This can be done from any field and for multiple levels. IE, after filtering to only "houston" I can then click on the filed that says "Preferred" adn then select fileter again. Now I am only looking at Preferred customers in houston, etc.

        To add these features to your toolbar. Open the toolbar in design mode. Right below the toolbar options list, there is button called "Add Pre-Defined Button". Once selected, a list of "Available command buttons" list will appear. Select, Records and you will see the blue arrows for moving forward and backward.

        Select Query and you will see the A..Z for sorting, and the "Quick Filter" feature.

        To add a "Find" button, go to Find and selct "Find by Key". This allows them to Index (A..Z) adn then Search (Find by Key).

        Hope this helps. This pre-defined functions are a great tool. I would spend a few minutes playing with each to see what they do.
