Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Delete problem

    My invoice form is built on a set with child and grandchild tables. I have a button on the form for deleting child, grand child or the entire record.

    This is part of the code that runs.
    This portion is if the user wants to delete the entire record.

    My problem: I give the user a choice to abort the Delete.
    I believe when the following command is run

    topparent.delete_record()

    another box pops up giving the user another chance to abort the delete. If the user now chooses to abort the delete, the rest of the code runs following this point.

    Is there a way to Not have the delete box pop up?
    Or, how can I trap the response from the second box so I can stop the rest of the code from running.

    dim tries as n 'code if multi user fails the delete
    tries=0
    retry:
    on error goto cant_lock
    'Set the index to : 'Invoice_No' in current window.
    topparent.Index_SetExplicit("Invoice_No")
    topparent.delete_record()
    parentform.restrict_delete = .t.
    parentform.index_set("Invoice_no")
    parentform.find(findMinvoiceno)

    Query.filter = "Transno = var-"vTransno"
    Query.order = "Recno()"
    Query.options = ""

    TIA,

    RE: Delete problem

    Ron,

    The way that I chose to delete records is by running a code opposed to using delete_record(). This allows me to create my own message box. If you are doing this in a set there are some things to keep in mind.

    A) Did you choose "Referential Integrity" for your child and grandchild tables? If so then when you delete or make changes to the parent, the children tables will be effected.

    B) Your set structure. This helps identify the tables by number. 1 being your parent, 2 your child and so on.

    If your set structure looks like this:

    Parent
    |
    |--- Child --- Grandchild

    The code to delete everything would be:

    tbl = table.current()
    tbl.change_begin()
    tbl.delete
    tbl.change_end(.t.)

    For you to delete just the child use:
    tbl = table.current(2)
    tbl.change_begin()
    tbl.delete
    tbl.change_end(.t.)

    For you to delete just the grandchild use:
    tbl = table.current(3)
    tbl.change_begin()
    tbl.delete
    tbl.change_end(.t.)

    Notice the number within the () on the first line. This tells Alpha which table to make the change to.

    So now you can create a message box and use the above code, allowing you to trap the result of the button pressed in the message box.

    Hope this makes sense.

      RE: Delete problem

      Hi Scott,

      Thank you again for your help.

      I understand completely what you've recommended and I found the example in the xbasic manual. Unfortunately, the code doesn't run. The following is what I have. It keeps on erroring out. I'm running the script from a button on a form. BTW, this is the same set which you helpped me with doing the "Duplicate an Invoice" problem.

      For some reason, it works using:

      topparent.delete_record()

      but but it won't run using tbl.delete()

      dim tries as n 'code if multi user fails the delete
      tries=0
      retry:
      on error goto cant_lock
      'Set the index to : 'Invoice_No' in current window.
      topparent.Index_SetExplicit("Invoice_No")

      tbl = table.current()
      tbl.change_begin()
      tbl.delete()
      tbl.change_end(.t.)

      parentform.restrict_delete = .t.
      parentform.index_set("Invoice_no")
      parentform.find(findMinvoiceno)

      Query.filter = "Transno = var-"vTransno"
      Query.order = "Recno()"
      Query.options = ""

        This is just a guess but I see parentform.restrict_delete = .t. in the script.
        If your restricting the delete then I think you have to un-restrict it at the top of the script before you can delete a record.
        parentform.restrict_delete = .f.

          RE: Delete problem

          I finally got it to work, but not until after I spent hours on this project.

          I tried many different approaches and with each one things kept getting worse. Finally I went back to the begining and realized the my code missed one very important line. How about:

          DIM Tbl as P

          DUH!

          I didn't understand why when I would start typing the code, Alpha 5 wouldn't help me.

          I don't know if this earns the Dumming Award, but it's got to be close.
