Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Another Quick Question

Is it possible to export or just copy a form from one database to another on a different machine without copying the whole database?

You can duplicate the table or set that has the form on it with a different name and copy it to the other database and then copy the form (by right clicking on it) to the table you want

      RE: Another Quick Question

It sounds to me like you are asking if it is possible to copy the middle third of a file from one computer to another without copying the whole file. To this, the answer is a definite NO.

However, if both computers are on a network it's a different story. In that case, it's a simple process of right clicking on the layout name that you want to copy and selecting the "Copy to..." option. At the bottom of the pop-up list is a "More> option that will allow you to copy the layout to any other table or set on the network.

If you are NOT on a network, since the layouts reside within a file, you must copy the file (actually files) from computer A to computer B. You need to know what table or set the layout is in and copy all the files with that table or set name to the 2nd computer. Once the files that contain the layout are available to the 2nd computer, then it is a simple process to open the copied file and use the same "Copy to..." option as described above.

I love it - this message sits here for an hour and we both answer at the same time.

          RE: Another Quick Question

Be sure to follow Daniel's advice and COPY TO A DIFFERENT TABLE NAME. If you use an existing name in the target database, you will overwrite that table and lose it.

            RE: Another Quick Question

Thanks all, we actually figured out the copy to across a network mathod about 5 minutes after I posted the msg. However when we opened the form on the other computer we had 38 errors in the field data. So we are just going to open two copies of the 'same' database and copy and paste the fields. It seems to work fine. Does anyone have a suggestion as to why the errors occured? The entire database was copied verbatim just 10 minutes before we tried the 'copy to'. Nothing but a few fields on the form were changed, no table or set changes were done. Just one of those that make ya say hmmmmmmm.

              RE: Another Quick Question

Unless your tables have exactly the same fields, you WOULD get errors. Your form references fields from within a table. You need to resolve those references and the form will behave properly.

hehehe Yeah Tom, we're aware of that. The TABLES all got copied with the enitire directory of the database over to the other computer about ten minutes before I wrote the first msg. The TABLES and FIELDS are EXACTLY the same. I'm not gonna worry too much about this problem at this point, I' in crunch time to get it finished. Thanks for all your help.

Tom and all who may be reading this, it was brought to my attention tonight that my last post sounded a bit rude so I wanted to apologize. I'm truly sorry if I appeared offensive.

I'll only be offended for the next two or three weeks, but once I uncurl from my fetal position, I'll be fine.

I'm really only joking. Quick little barbs are what makes the world go 'round.

Thanks anyway, it is nice to see that people do care about one's feelings.
