Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tablet PC/Desktop A5 Application

I have an application for recording information spread over a Desktop PC and a Tablet PC. The main application is housed on the Desktop PC.

Basically I want to export customer detail to the mobile device, conduct a site survey by recording various data, return to office and import the new details back to the Desktop.

I have two tables on the desk top called:
    1. Customers
    2. Site Details

I have two tables on the Mobile Device called:
    1. Customers with Site Details
    2. Imported Details (customers & Site Details) used for Archiving.

I am trying to achieve three tasks.
    A.
Export to the mobile device the customer name, address & contact details in to the appropriate fields in the mobile Customers & Site Details table.

    B.
Import from the Mobile Device the site details to the desktop Imported Details table. The customer details exported from the desktop is ignored in the import as the details are already in the customer table on the desktop.

    C.
Archive the mobile data after the import task.

From my knowledge to date I think I need to do the following.

    A.
Exporting new customer details to the Mobile should add a record to the customer table on my mobile device. There should be no records in this table from the previous site visit due to the Archiving executed in point C.

    B.
Importing to the main application in the Desktop PC should be added as a New Record to the Imported Details table only, customer details are already recorded.

    C.
Auto Archiving would need a duplicate table to accommodate the data fields in the main mobile table.

    Questions:
Can a record that is imported in to the desktop be ADDED as a new record without affecting the existing records already in that table?

When executing the Archive task after the import can the original data be deleted from the main table in the mobile device after archiving? If yes what would be the best way to remove the record?

Can I achieve the above on two licensed Runtime versions of Alpha 5?
In the event of the Synch feature can not talking to each other I will execute the importing/exporting feature through a third partly desktop folder.

Sorry if this sounds a bit basic but I can give more details if required.

    Regards
    Andy

      RE: Tablet PC/Desktop A5 Application

      Hi Jim,
      Hope your well?
      Thanks for the feedback.

I made two test applications with a desktop folder to house the desktop export information and the mobile import information. Once I have cracked the import export functions I will invest in my Tablet PC and use it

I have not worked out how to make the two applications talk to each other without the desktop folder yet so I do the following.

Using the desktop application I export (Excel 4.0) to the desktop folder and then from with in the Mobile application I import the information from the desktop folder.

I then complete the data entry in the mobile application and then export back to the desktop folder.

I then import the folder data back into the main desktop application. I have added to import and export options in both applications to move either one or multiple records at once. When import from the mobile device is completed I auto Append the data to an archive table in the mobile pc, and the auto delete the records ready for the next desktop data transfer.

Jim if the Table PC is sitting in its docking station and is networked how can I exchange information between the two applications without the desktop folder? Another consideration is professional installation software can a similar folder be created for the import/export function in the main alpha application folder and not on the desktop?

The simulation appears to work well and would only facilitate two mouse clicks to prime the Tablet PC prior using in the field.

      Regards
      Andy
