Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

New Data Not Accepted in V5

I keep track of the hymns we sing at church every week. Recently I upgraded from V4.5 to V5.

The set has 3 tables-Dateused, Hymndate, and Hymnlist. Dateused has only 1 field for the date. Hymndate contains the date and the page number. Hymnlist contains the page number, hymn title, and composer.

In my form I enter the current date, then go to an embedded browse and enter the page number then the hymn title and composer show as read only and move on to the next selection.

I have had no problem with this in V5 until I added more hymns in Hymnlist. Now only the original hymns work correctly-the read only fields show up. When I enter one of the new hymn page numbers the read only fields do not show up.

    Can anyone offer any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Allen

RE: New Data Not Accepted in V5

    Allen,

    Two ideas to try:

    1) check your build against the latest available patch, and update if necessary;

    2) rebuild (update) the indexes to all three tables.

If that doesn't get it tell us more about the set design. Would I be right in assuming the link from Dateused table to Hymndate table would be 1:N (one to many), but the link from Hymndate table to Hymnlist table would be 1:1 ?

      You are correct.

I did as you said. I installed the latest patch--but to no effect. It still does the same thing. It doesn't seem to recognize the new records in Hymnlist.

        Allen,

I'm fresh out of other ideas, but would be happy to see if the same behavior occurs here. This would rule out idiosyncracies associated with your pc. Might give us a chance to look the entire arrangement over to see if there might be other explanations for what you're seeing. How about attaching a zipped copy of the database to a message here ?

As it turns out, I had a duplicate database and somehow a couple of the tables got into the wrong database. I corrected that situation and now things work correctly. Thanks for the help, though.

Allen, don't feel badly. This sort of thing has happened to many of us. If you have two copies of the same database on your system, it's hard to tell which one is open, since their displays are identical. The 'details' view of the tables and sets page in the control panel can help if one remembers to check it from time to time. -- tom

Echoing Tom's message many of use have been there.

During development I often have multiple copies of an application. To prevent confusion I change the background color of the startup form in each version. This usually makes things very clear. I also start the different versions from different desktop shortcuts which are also clearly labelled.

And of course each version is in its own folder.
