Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report versus Form

The Report Editor has the capability to import a Form, Browse, Report, Label, or Letter.

Does the Form Editor have the capability to import a Report?

We would like a particular report mirrored to a form for data enry. The form appears to only filter from the parent to the child. It is like the great, great grandchild that we would like to include in the filter. If we could import a report into a form, it would be duplicated in detail. Is this possible?

    RE: Report versus Form

    Sharon,

No, I don't think you can import the report layout and expect it to behave the same way on the form as it does in the report. The report engine displays fields from multiple detail records with only a single instance of the field object in the details band (region). There is no equivalent 'band' in a form layout.

Tell us more about what you need. Perhaps others will be able to offer other ideas for you.

      RE: Report versus Form

      Thanks Tom,

What I am really trying to do is have a form function similarly to a report - but be capable of accepting data entry. We have a student database with child and grandchildren etc.records. We need the form to display multiple records for individual students determined (filtered?) by their occupational choice. Example: student "A" has selected a training program, an occupation within the program, courses within the occupation, and specific skills within each of the courses. we need those specific skills to appear on a form, based on the students choices. Our attempts so far have produced multiple student skills or multiple students not just the individual student in question matched to his skills.

Our database is constructed as follows:

Parent - linked on student Id + program ID

Child - linked on student Id + Program Id + occupation Id

GChild - linked on program Id + Occupation Id + Skill Id

GGchild - student Id+ Program Id + Skills Id

We want to generate records in a form filtered to the student Id, program Id and Skills Id for each individual.

How can we make this work????

            RE: Report versus Form

Sharon, I think the compound link field expressions are getting in your way. Try this:

Child table use the student id field only
GChild table use the Occupation ID field only
GGChild table use the Skills ID field only

              Sharon,

Immediately after posting the previous I began to have second thoughts. Take the advice with a large ration of salt. Don't spend much time on it if results are positive immediately.

A better suggestion to you would have been to encourage you to post a working copy of the database here so that we can exactly what's going on.
