Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: The Disappearing Browse?

Did you check whether the changes made by you are or are not saved in the table regardless of the fact that the new child records have dissappeared from the browse ?
Check the table what happens there.

My guess is, that the table did change, it is just the visual aspect of the browse that gives concerns?

Pitty my suggestion did not work, with me it did.
However I should say that I got comments that changing referential integrity settings can create other problems (which I am not familiar with at this point).

I think something is still wrong in embedded browses.
What is your table doing ?

    Greetings,

    Marcel

      RE: The Disappearing Browse?

Initially I had an order expression in the set definition but I took that out. Any changes that are made to records are retained. I figure it has to be something to do with the index re-synching after any changes or after moving to another parent record.

If my understanding is correct when re-sorting the order of the browse Alpha creates a temporary index and uses this to sort the browse. When moving to another parent record is Alpha still trying to use that temp index?

        RE: The Disappearing Browse?

That is too much behind the curtain for me to confirm whether that would be true or not.
As Aaron Brown from Alpha reads a lot of these messages lately, maybe he can say something about that.

I have seen a lot of strange behaviour in embedded browses lately. For instance, when you fill a row on an embedded browse, it shows all entries nice and clear. But when you change to the second row, suddenly all entered info on the first row 'dissappears', but also re-appears when you click one of those fields.
In my example, there was also a limitation of the number of rows that became visible: no more then two rows.
When entered the third row, the second would make place for the third and only two rows in total were visible.
As said, all problems disappeared on changing the referential integrity.
Did you change that settings on table level ?
It should be changed on set-level in order to be effective.

I can not add more to the solution of your problem then to express my idea that this is some kind of bug.

I remember you that there is a workaround possible, by using a sub-form instead of an embedded browse.
Maybe that is the way to solve this for you, who knows.

        Succes !

Thanks for your help. It's one of those annoying things which if I can resolve will make for a much slicker end application!

            RE: The Disappearing Browse?

Have you tried using a button to run a query against the grandchild table, instead of relying on QuickSort on the toolbar? The query would not contain a filter expression, but would contain an ordering expression.

            Another idea:

Define two sets, using different embedded ordering expressions (for the grandchild link) for each.

              Tom

I have buttons on the forms for the sorting.

2 sets and therefore 2 forms would not be ideal as the ability to switch easily between the different orders is needed.

When changing data now the browse appears much more stable, the problem is only now occuring when moving from one parent record to another.

                RE: The Disappearing Browse?

                Hi again.

I stumbled over the same problem again.
Yesterday I tested my application with he changed settings in the referential integrity and it worked fine.

Today, same form, no changes, it doesn't anymore.
Embedded browse does not show rows.

It rather makes you crawl upon the wall.

Glen let me know if you found a solution to this mess.

                Greetings,

                Marcel

                    Glen,

While the narrative in your messages are clear enough, the subject of this thread is misleading. Your browse object is not disappearing, is it? Instead, the rows displayed within the browse object are vanishing, right?

I've seen the same thing with a test set, and have come to conclude that the Quicksort tool no longer works with multi-tier sets.

If I discover something that will work around this more gracefully than separate forms with hard coded sort sequences I'll let you know.

                      Tom,

Would you be so kind to inform me what the Quick Sort has to do with this ? You are clearly ahead of me here, I simply don't understand. Is this Quicksort tool run automatically if the browse is changed, or how should I see this?

It seems, I just checked, that the problem disappears when you run a Database Compact and refresh indexes afterwards.

It is an annoying problem, I can't miss the embedded browse function in my app.

                      Regards,

Correct the Browse object does not disappear

"Instead, the rows displayed within the browse object are vanishing, right? "

Correct, the pesky little records scamper away as soon as the parent record changes!

Appreciate your help Tom although if this is as you describe ie: the quick sort function no longer working properly with multi-tier sets perhaps this is a job for the boys at Alpha to fix? Aaron..... Selwyn?................. Please................

Looking forward to the next build from a wet & windy West Country (UK)

The quick sort facility is available from the standard toolbar when in a browse, select a column in the browse and click the relevant button to sort ascending or descending. You can also use Action Scripting (as I did) to set up buttons on your forms to do exactly the same and therefore can also do via xbasic.

                          Regards

                            Glen,

I've changed my mind after further testing. I think the difficulty lies with compound link field keys (links based on expressions instead of single fields.)

Have successfully built a 3 tier set and found that quick sort tool and running quick sorts via action scripts from buttons seem to work fine PROVIDED the link between parent and child is a single field, and PROVIDED the link between parent and child is a single field. When I use an expression consisting of two field values concatenated together I see the problem you're describing.

If it will help I could upload the example, but that may not be necessary.

Either I'm typing faster than I think, or I'm thinking faster than I can type, but...

                              It should have read:

The set I am using is linked via expressions and not a single field.

Are you saying that if I create a new calculated field and use this to link the tables this would overcome this problem?
