Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memo editor title text

    Hi all,

    Memo field on a form;
    Press the pencil icon to open up the memo editor.

    The title bar text is the name of the field. Is anyone aware of whether this text can be set? Dynamic would be nice but static text would be fine in my current situation.

    I am sure this has been covered but my searchs have come up empty.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    RE: Memo editor title text

    I think you would have to write your own code, which isn't hard, e.g.
    p.text="William Hanigsberg"
    a5_memo_editor(p,"Bill's Title")

    and then you could use this instead of the memo editor. For example, if your memo is on a form, you could make the field read-only and then have a button that opens the memo editor with those 2 lines (except that p.text would contain the memo's contents).
    The function a5_memo_editor returns "save" or "close" -- to update the memo field, you then have to place the value of p.text in your memo.

          I'm very intersted in subject but I don't quite understand all of this.

          Would it be possible for someone to make a small working example, please.

            Open up the interactive editor. Copy in each line below & press enter after each line.

            p.text="William Hanigsberg"
            a5_memo_editor(p,"Bill's Title")

              With a separate button to open the editor the pencil button is no longer needed. Is the pencil button a property that can be turned off? I didn't see anything on the property sheet and I'm not sure if it is something that can be accessed through code.

              Thank you,

                "OK", that works great.

                Now, the little help box says that the function ( I assume that's what this command is ) returns 'lastbutton'.

                I'm assuming that to mean either a character value of "Save" or "Close" and "lastbutton' is a character variable.

                What do I have to do to see what last button is?

                Or, what book do I have to use to find out how to do this. I can't find any reference to a5_memo_editor()in the books I've downloaded.

                  RE: Memo editor title text

                  "Last Button" is a system variable that in certain circumstances (such as this one) returns the name of the last button pressed. So using Peter's example and from the interactive editor...

                  p.text="William Hanigsberg"

                  ?a5_memo_editor(p,"Bill's Title")
                  = "save"

                  when you press the save button.

                  ?a5_memo_editor(p,"Bill's Title")
                  = "close"

                  when you press the close button.

                  ?a5_memo_editor(p,"Bill's Title")
                  = ""

                  when you press the "x" on the form.

                    Auto complete works for a5_memo_editor() but it is not mentioned in the help files.

                    Ed, are you listening?

                    This is a very useful function.

                      RE: Memo editor title text

                      Thank you Peter, that's the little extra that I needed to write the code I want.

                      By chance, just this week I was working on this very same thing. I must have spent a good 8 hours trying to get my memo editor to work the way I wanted with absolutely no success. Frankly, I really didn't know what to do.

                      Then by chance this post showed up along with Dr. Wayne's response and your help. Now I have just what I neede all along.

                      This bulletin board and the willingness to share of the faithful participants are what makes Alpha 5 such a great product.

                      Over the years I have received so much help, thank you all!!
