Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I have heard rumors that some government agencies are looking outside of Microsoft products for software. They don't want to be tied to one restricted source that isn't responsive. When the buggiest software on my computer (and most of the computers at my work) is Word, they have some serious issues they aren't addressing.

      RE: Interesting Reading

It's more than just rumors. As the article pointed out, Germany, China, and several other countries have officially adapted open source [Linux] as the de facto standard. We're talking entire countries, not just individual companies.

If that isn't enough to get your interest, Novell finally gave up it's battle with MS and is currently trying to replace Red Hat as possibly the world's premium Linux Vendor. Its funny how Novell has migrated away from its long investment in proprietary formats and is now a champion of the open source community.

And let's not forget IBM, the premiere global hi tech company, has invested approximately one billion dollars in Linux development. In fact, many of IBM's super computers run on Linux and virtually all of their business computer systems run on Linux

And all of the above was accomplished before the arrival of the latest Linux kernel, ver 2.6, which has some big time major enhancements.

So what does all of this have to do with Alpha Five? If nothing else, it reinforces the anti-MS sentiment that is so prevalent in the US and around the world. Many companies and/or governments are dying for an opportunity to purchase high quality products from a company other than MS. Alpha Software, theres your golden opportunity!

Since Access is a obviously a MS product, that leaves a huge opening that Alpha Software can fill. That's why development of the WAS and Client/Server are so critical to the future of the company. I think we are on the verge of a new revolution in the world of computing. This doesnt mean Microsofts Windows monopoly will crumble any time soon, but they will be facing formidable competition for the first time in their history.

And it would be very interesting if somewhere down the road, Alpha Software decided to develop a Linux version, they could make a major inroad without any major competition. Remember, the first company to succeed seems to develop a legacy of loyal customers that can carry a company for years.

        Amen,
I think the move to support Mysql is somewhat of an indication that Alpha sees this also. With WAS there should really be no need for windows at all if you want to run a web app. A Linux version of Alpha 5 would be even better but realistically Alpha isn't a big company so I really wouldn't like to see them spread too thin. They do what they do better than anyone else does it. Hopefully this will continue. Maybe down the road they can look at this.

I know some large multinational companies are moving away from platform dependent programs and toward browser based solutions that work on any operating system. I use software from one such company (at one time they were Sony's largest single customer for CD's) and they will move their major internal use software product to completely browser based early next year. I agree that WAS is a real solution for the future and much bigger than many people realise.

The days of Windows dominating the software market may indeed becoming numbered. At one time IBM had a corner on the PC market. Now they are just one of many and others are taking the lead. The same will happen in software.
