Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windev / A5

    Hello,

I'm currently evaluting the WinDev 7.5 trial version. Until now I do know Alpha5v5 only.

My question: Did any of you compare the two products in the past and is able to point out advantages and disadvantages?

    Greetings, Mario

    Mario,

I have not done a comparison with this other product, my advice is to concentrate on learning as much as you can about Alpha5 V5. That is the way to get the best value out of Alpha5.

      RE: Windev / A5

I have done some evaluation of WinDev. Ended up choosing Alpha for my next project.

      Reasons:

      1) There is a lot of good technology out there. As long as the technology meets my requirements I will choose the product that seems to have the most customer friendly people behind the technology.

      2) As a prior user of Clarion, PowerBasic, Microsoft and Borland products, the openness and customer oriented attitude of Alpha is very refreshing. I get tired of companies who seem to see their customers as a necessary evil. The Windev folks seem to have that tech-centric attitude as do the other companies I mentioned.

      3) The English version of WinDev always seems incomplete.

      4) If you are doing software engineering with time for extensive analysis then Windev might be better. If you are wanting to manage data, or be able to provide users with a lot of built in features (like reports, sorting capabilities, mail merge, etc. then Alpha is probably better.

        Mario,

I've evaluated WinDev a few years ago, so I know nothing about the further evolvement of this program.

At that time, however - because of me not being of french mother tongue, we were evaluating the english version of this french product - we recognized a few quality problems. It looked like they did not quite go the whole distance in translating this product. Many procedures - especially in their automatic code generation procedures failed because of this. Also, support at this time was centralized in southern france. Obviously people there were not entirely used to talk in english, so we've ended up with me talking french. A sound to be heard :-))

Overall, we found the software to be rather complicated to use but conceded at this time that the french version, when in the hands of competent programmers, could be used to do quite sophisticated applications. True, it's got an impressive suite of modules but we found this to sometimes be an obstacle to finding the easiest way to perform a given task.
One thing, though, we found to be a very attractive feature which could -IMO- also be of interest for Alpha Software: WinDev got it's own tightly integrated data-analysis-tool (called MERISE) which allowed you to auto-create your table structure directly from this tool. And this was fully reentrant, meaning that you could regenerate the tablestructure at any time during the development process(e.g. after some modifications). It's data-catalog could then be used as a repository.

IMO WinDev is no match to A5 though. The latters ergonomy and range of functions and modules seems to me to be far superior to WinDev's.

They're having quite the discussion about A5 there.

I think they have a real nice program there if they could get their act together.

                Hello,

many thanks for the active participation in this comparison :)

Id would be great to make more adjustments to provide applications for not speaking English user, with Alpha5. I want to provide a German application.

Hopefully, the problems with the Shortcuts AltGr E and AltGr Q for '@' and 'Euro' on a German keyboard belong to the past in A5V6.

                Greetings, Mario
