Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter Syntax

    I have a table with will contain the cost tha applies of a certail date, each record has

    Price_id
    Start_date
    Finish_date
    Vehicle_Id
    Org_id
    and then a number of price fields.

    it is not necessary for the finish price to be filled in for the last row of the table, i.e. this row will be from the start date onwards, whilst other rows would have both start and finish dates e.g.

    01.01.2003 - 30.06.2003
    01.07.2003 - 31.12.2003
    01.01.2004 - Blank

    I am attempting to write a function that I will use to return the price_id, when it is given the date & vehicle and it can use a global variable to get the org_id. I used the filter genie to show me what the format of the filter should be but when I try to transfer it to be the filter of part of a tablecount expression is errors with:-

    ERROR: command: price = tablecount("tbl_vehicle_price","(Start_date cv_organisation+"') .OR.(Start_date = {"+dtoc(date_)+"} .and. Vehicle_id = '"+Vehicle_ID+"'.and. Org_id = '"+Var->cv_organisation+"' )")
    ui_msg_box("test",str(price),UI_NO_SYMBOL)
    END FUNCTION

    Any suggestions ?

    Thanks

    John

    John,

    How about zipping a working copy of the database and posting it here?

    Your message will make more sense if the code is formatted correctly. Try delimiting the function statements with html tag "pre". See the link at left of the reply message screen.

      RE: Filter Syntax

      i suspect you are referencing table field names in the function, but the function doesn't know that "date_" is a table field name, and may be looking for a variable of that name.
      you should pass the appropriate arguments to the function rather than assume the function will be smart enough to figure out that the arguments come from the current table.

        RE: Filter Syntax

        John,

        Just having some coffee here so bare with me.

        I see 2 problems right away. First is there should be no spaces in your filter expresion, the second is you have date variables with in curley brackets.
        You also use dtoc(date_), is date_ your field or did you mean to put dtoc(date())?

        I tried to fix the code for you with the exception of what I last mentioned about date_

        Try this: Make sure the line of code is on one line, not as shown here.

        price = tablecount("tbl_vehicle_price","Start_date"='"+dtoc(date_)+"'.and.isblank(Finsh_date).and.Vehicle_id ='"+Vehicle_ID+"'.and.Org_id='"+Var->cv_organisation+"'.OR.Start_date"='"+dtoc(date_)+"'.and.Finsh_date >='"+dtoc(date_)+"'.and.Vehicle_id='"+Vehicle_ID+"'.and.Org_id='"+Var-cv_organisation+"'")

        Hope this helps or give a staring point.

          RE: Filter Syntax

          OK I've had a go at the various usggestions with no luck so I'm attaching a cut down database with the just the needed table and function to cut down bandwidth.

          I've tried removing the spaces to no avail, the inclusion of {} round dates was because when I've tried dates before this has been needed and worked.

          date_ and vehicle_id are not field names as they are variables in the function definition.

          I'm testing it with the call

          ? Get_PriceID("0000",{10/12/2003}) from the interative pane.

          This should return a result of 1 in the pane and as a message box.

          Thanks

              This also works:

              dim price as n
              price = tablecount("tbl_vehicle_price","dtoc(Start_date) cv_organisation+"' .OR. dtoc(Start_date) = '"+dtoc(date_)+"' .and. Veh_id = '"+Vehicle_ID+"' .and. Org_id = '"+Var->cv_organisation+"'")
              Get_PriceID = ui_msg_box("test",str(price),UI_NO_SYMBOL)
