Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Another Best Approach Question

    As I explained in my previous question, I have a table that contains a 48 charater field that contains entries such as

    00000001111111000000011111112221111100000

    These represnt the number of bookings taken for a vehicle for each of the halfhours during a day.

    In our current software we use an embedded browse with 30 odd fields (we only realy cover 07:00 - 2300 ) where we set the colour to yellow for not booked, green for booked and red for double or more booked.

    I attach a file showing a sample.

    I would be interested in suggestions of the best way to approach this in A5.

    Thanks

    John

      With this method, you are allowing and then showing when an overbooking is made. Do you want to do that or check when a booking is made to ensure that availability is there and then make the booking?

            WE are happy for double bookings to be made, this situation can exist whilst alternatives are sorted out and having it in red on the screen clearly shows as issue has to be resolved.

            For example we might take a booking for a single day that is put against bus 1 initially, we might a week later have another booking which is for a whole week and the best bus to let go is bus 1, as it has least bookings, when the booking is entered it will cause a double booking with the origional booking, and the staff will normally come back to sort that out later.

              I like it but how do I put it in a browes type approach as we need more than one row at a time, for example if a client wants to book a bus every monday for 5 weeks, I want to be able to show the data for those five days.

              (PS can I build a browse that just shows calculated fields ?)

                RE: Another Best Approach Question

                Why not just go to the Properties of each column and enter a color equation:

                IF("Col_A_name>=0,"Black on Yellow",IF("Col_A_name>=1,"Black on Green","White on Red"))

                You would have to change the name reference in each column and this would be a bit tedious to do 40 times but you could copy everything else and just enter the column name. (You can probably also do it with the genie but I think it's a bit difficult to cut-and-paste to the genie.)

                  RE: Another Best Approach Question

                  If you really want to make the numbers disappear, just make them both the same color such as "Green on Green".

                    RE: Another Best Approach Question

                    I agree with Cal and Stan that these approaches are suitable for the occasion. But when building a matrix-sort of display which involved many squares, another approach is more algebraic . This approach can assign colors within a loop as opposed to copying and pasting the properties of so many squares. Also, once set up a change can easily be made (e.g. a new color for a different situation) without copying and pasting every square.

                    How is this done. If you look at Peter Greulich's "Three-Month Holiday Calendar" on the Code Archive forum, you get the idea:

                    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/alphaphorum/read.php3?sortby=lastreply&direction=desc&num=7&id=384&thread=384

                    He uses "inactive" buttons (no events assigned) to display information. With these button object names being, say, "BOTTON01", BUTTON02", etc. you can change the color of the 23rd button with the lines:
                    ------
                    i=23
                    vObject = "BUTTON"+PADL(alltrim(Str(i)),2,"0")
                    eval(vObject+".fill.forecolor") = "Green"
                    ------

                    The same such statement can change the text of the buttons, the font color, etc. Thus, with a short script you can change the appearance of a massive display. Just another thought.

                      John,

                      Why not populate a dummy table with your 5-days? Then use color equations, etc. in an embedded browse.

                        Forgot to say: the dummy table can have 48 or more fields for each record. Parse your 48 character field into the 48 fields, etc.

                            Thanks for this every one this has given me plenty to think about and I'll let you know how I implement it in the end.

                            It may be a few weeks before I do as I'm focusing on writing the scripts etc I need in the current system for export the data that I need into the new A5 application.

                            Thanks again
