Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5Runtime, Multiple users, same machine

Having problems with A5runtime where multiple users with their own logon for XP can't access A5 runtime software from their logon. (error code edit registry??)

RE: A5Runtime, Multiple users, same machine

    Jim,

In the typical LAN the runtime is installed on each workstation, and run locally against the database on the server. Each instance of the runtime must have the necessary permissions to write to the local machine's registry, since Alpha Five uses the registry each time it opens.

Optimium performance over the LAN will be achieved only if you 'network optimize' the database creating shadow copies on each workstation.

Your post sounds like you put the runtime on the server and are expecting folks to log in and run multiple instances of it. That's not the recommended approach.

Thanks for your ususal quick reply, and I apologize for not being more specific.

I'm actually using a "peer to peer" network, 3 machines, with one having the database, the others shadowing off of it. We have different "users" however on XP signing on to the work stations. Only the user I install it under can access the application software. Do I need to install A5 on each machine, for each user (up to 3 times on the same machine?)

I think you'll need to place the runtime folder on each machine and make sure that it is fully accessable to ALL users of that machine. XP is very difficult to figure out with permissions and the like. We have certain routines that need to be run each time the machine is booted, and we still don't quite know which start menu startup folder to place them in. I would imagine that you would need to be the machine "administrator" to install the runtime modules, and then grant all users full access permission to use the folder.

          Good luck,

          Tom

RE: A5Runtime, Multiple users, same machine

I am experiencing the same problem with XP. The issue is with limited accounts. As long as everyone using the machine has administative rights, then a single installation can be accessed by all users. The problems occur when an account is given limited rights.

I have tried every install configuration I can think of; install runtime to program files, to c:, to the all-users folder, etc. I've tried setting share permissions (some files cannot be shared in XP) I havent' been able to run my application on a limited user account. Has anyone come up with a work around for this? I don't like giving all users administrative rights on a machine.

In typical Microsoft wisdom, if you are using WinXP home, your only option is administrator rights. The limited rights in XP home will not allow access to the registry and Alpha requires access to run. If you are running Pro, then you can set a user up as a power user, which gives them some rights but not full access.

RE: A5Runtime, Multiple users, same machine

I believe the only access to the registry that causes problems can be stopped by using the -NoAssoc argument.

Typically, WinXP allows access to HKEY_CURRENT_USER but not to the other root folders. Your A5 System settings are stored under HKEY_CURRENT_USER but A5 also tries to set the folder options to associate certain extensions with A5. Using the -NoAssoc argument stops that.

If this is wrong (i.e., doesn't resolve the issue), please let me know.

Thanks Jerry. I see upon further investigation that I can set up a "standard-user" account, if I join the machine to a domain. The standard-user account sounds like your "power user", but we don't use domains on our little network. I will need to learn something about networks to do this. I guess I am beginning to peel the onion.

Thanks for the suggestion, Cal. After looking at the registry, I can see that your idea is over my head. I don't understand enough about the registry to implement your idea. I think that we will have to live with the security issues until I can learn enough to implement a better solution.

                      Jeff,

Although the explanation may be over your head, the implementation is extremely easy. Just add -NoAssoc to your startup icon arguments.

                      EXAMPLE:
                      Instead of:
                      C:\A5v5\Alpha5.exe C:\DataDir\MyApp.adb

                      Use:
                      C:\A5v5\Alpha5.exe -NoAssoc C:\DataDir\MyApp.adb

                      This also works:
                      C:\A5v5\Alpha5.exe C:\DataDir\MyApp.adb -NoAssoc

NOTE: If you are just using "C:\DataDir\MyApp.adb" as your startup definition, I recommend changing it. A5 will build it by going to the A5 Control Panel and selecting Tools/Create Shortcut.

Thanks for the explanation, Cal. I thought that you were suggesting that I edit the registry in the previous message.

I tried adding the -NoAssoc argument to the shortcut and it was partially successful. The application will run, but not without a half-dozen error messages at start-up. There are four or five text files that cannot be written and a program file that is not accessible.

                        Best regards,
