Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Modal, modeless

I am not fond of opening a form in modeless state.
Too many things can go wrong just trying to exit a form...
Hence the default setting for ALL forms and browses is 'modal'.

That being said: I activate a 'data entry, new record' layout in modeless cuz I'm there only to enter new data....

Question: If I do not change the form state to modal before I leave it (to return to a menu) what state is it in if I open it somewhere and don't specify which state on activation???? And does it even matter???

      RE: Modal, modeless

      Haven't gotten that far yet....
I prefer to default to 'modal' and then as form is activated, set 'modeless' if need full date entry.
If not then use 'buttons' to activate for new or change...
Just got thinking about forms that are not activated and what state they 'would be in' if activated, but not by programmed actions. ie something that is menu activated...

Might not be a problem, just curious...

        Dick,

Why not experiment a bit ? Figure out whether the modality is sticky or not, and then report back ? My 'guess' is that you'll find that it's not sticky. If the form is opened I think it will be initialized with the properties that were set in design mode, not the properties that were in effect when the form was last closed. Let us know what you find out.

Ok will do, but here's more ointment.....
When you use a menu, and go to a new form....
Is it better (or advisable) to activate features on the 'go to' form from the 'menu form' ON_PUSH event or from the 'go to' form ON_INIT event?????

I'm currently trying to : open new form, close old form, activate new form, set to new record status : from the menu ON_PUSH event... Getting some crazy flickering and jumping on the screen and not the result I want...

Sorry to take up so much of your time, but as you can see -- I need help.

            Dick,

Ok, let us know what you find out on the modality thing.

Folks open forms differently depending on their needs.

A typical approach would leave the main menu form active, load the called form hidden, set the desired index or query in place, then show it to the user. When the form is closed the main menu will reappear. This works well when the forms are maximized.

Haven't been a real fan of leaving forms open, but not adverse to new things...

One thing I have NOT Been doing (consciously) is to set a query or an index, UNLESS it's part of the Action Scripting parameters that are designated when the script is designed.... Have to pay more attention to that...

Since I had to start all over from scratch, I'll see if I can make leaving the main menu open and just paint over it..

              thanx

                Richard,

An important aspect here is that the Main Menu form s/b based on a dummy table. Otherwise, leaving it up throughout the session would be a mistake. -- tom
