Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    $$ problem

I seem to have problem that I have not been able to fix.
this table was created in A5 V1 and has been used upgraded to A5 V5.
When I added a new field in the table and saved it the table hangs up at record #11630 and after a long delay alpha gave me the message "The system cannot find the file specified $$??????.ddd. (every time it is a different temporary file) I have deleted quite a bit of data around record #11620 again and again and then tried to add my new field. The field rules work fine and I can even re-evaluate the field rules without a hitch.
I copied the entire table and messed with it and same results.
I even tried to append the data to a new table so I could recover some of my data at a later time, but it has the same error.
    Is there a solution?
This table we use to keep track of our Customer Service Calls and is very important to us.
    Thank you.

I have seen the same error message and have found that the name in the message is essentially meaningless. Apparently, the message occurs if the program is trying to open a table and can't find it, or there is some other error that prevents reading the data. The fact that the name has a .ddd extension could indicate a data dictionary issue. Be sure to compact the databse before continuing.

The fact that you created new table and appended data would indicate the problem is with the data itself. To test that, create another new table in A5V5 with the same structure. Don't copy it, create from scratch. Start by appending just some of the data. For example, append the first half of the records. If that is ok, append half of the remaining records. If that fails, there is a problem with a record in that group. As long as the data seems ok, keep appending part of the remaining data. The concept is to isolate which group of records has a problem.

Once you have identified a group of records with a problem, empty the table and append half of that group. If it is ok, append the rest. The failing group will be much smaller each time so keep repeating the process of emptying the table and appending half of the bad group. Eventually, the size of the bad group of records will get very small and you should find the error. Even if you can't find an individual record that is wrong, you should be able to recover nearly all of the data.

      RE: $$ problem

Jerry's idea is a good good, but you might have better luck
      if you simply
      1. export the data to a csv file
      2. import the csv in the new table.
      3. reapply the field rules to the new table.
      4. copy the forms from the old table to the new table.

If, after testing, the new table is ok, then drop the old table and rename the new table the same as the old one.

        RE: $$ problem

        Thanks Jerry.
I tried to compact the database and another error occurred
"Could not update the Table". You are right; there is a group of data that is bad. I thought there would be an easy way to find the bad data from looking at it, but it all seems to be ok.
I will do as you suggest.
Thanks again for your help in this matter.

          Thanks Melvin,
This looks like an easy way for me to save all my data.
I duplicated the table for now with all data and dictionaries, so I can experiment with it. The table is being used during the day. This way I will know what should work If I am successful with my test table.
Thank you and also the wonderful Alpha Forum.

            Melvin,
That worked great and only took about 1/2 hour.
Now I'll Do the real table.
I did not loose any data.
            Thanks again.

              RE: $$ problem

Just to add to what Jerry has said. When I have had this issue (some type of corrupted data in the table fields) I have had very good luck using Xbasic to step through the table and copy the data to another table. It seems that Xbasic will not complain about the bad data, but copies it in an acceptable format to the new table.

              Good luck,
              Jim
