Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    where are my global variables?

Using the on-save event, and action scripting, (set variable(s) to field values - fields on a form), I have set up some global variables. When I step through them, they all hold the correct data.

C_one is a logical checkbox field, and if checked should (on the first loop) enter a surname into a field called last_name in a second table (see below)

This is somewhat simplified, but I hope explains the basis of the problem.

my difficulty is that I cannot find or identify or use the global variables from one table to enter data in a second table.

I cannot use a dim C_one as L statement since although it does not generate an error, it has no value,
If I just use C_one in the xbasic script, it brings up the error c_one not found

I guess that in neither case am I actually using the global variable I set up in the previous table.

I have been through the manuals, but cannot see the obvious, would really would appreciate a pointer.

    ----------------------------------------------------
    For n = 1 to 2
    SELECT
    CASE C_one=.T.
    Field one = lastname
    CASE C_one =.T. .and. n>1
    Field one = cust_id
    Next n

RE: where are my global variables?

If you define a global variable in a table structure definition, the variable is only created when you open the table the first time after the database is opened. If the table has not been opened, either directly or by opening a form, the global does not exist. For this reason, globals are frequently initially defined in an autoexec script.

      Jerry,

Thanks for your input. Yes you are right, but I seem to have found a solution as well.

You know how you suddenly figure it out whilst driving home, or whatever. It hit me at the intersection, and on testing it works fine

The problem was that I was using action scripting to set up variables in one table, then trying to use them in another table.

I then realised that if I set up the variables from within the table that needed them. but instead of selecting current form, I used "another" form for the fields, the form holding the data. it worked fine.

I sure hope that makes sense?

Anyway I really appreciate your reply, thanks again.

RE: where are my global variables?

You also have a problem with
        CASE C_one=.T.
        Field one = "lastname"
        CASE C_one =.T. .and. n>1
        Field one = "cust_id"

The second block will never get executed because if c_one = .t., the first block is true and all of the rest of your case statements get skipped. You should review how select..end select works: http://support.alphasoftware.com/xbasic_reference/Language/select_..._case.htm

            Lenny, just an update.

            CASE C_one=.T.
            Field one = "lastname"
            CASE C_one =.T. .and. n>1
            Field one = "cust_id"

            should have read

            CASE C_one=.T. .AND. n=1
            Field one = "lastname"
            CASE C_one =.T. .and. n>1
            Field one = "cust_id"

Works fine now, but I have one remaining hair puller which I am about to post, if you have any 'idle' time

            Thanks MW
