Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    .adb

When I go to open the database nothing happens. Is there a maximum size to the number of scripts that you can have?
I just saved the database and set it up to open a menu and now the .adb does not open at all. The screen flashes a cople of times and then I have a blank screen with Alpha5 waiting for me to open a database. This is not really good because this application that I'm developing is a mission critical app. I hope this is not a bug in Alpha.

    RE: .adb

Sounds like something wrong with your startup form or autoexec script. Start Alpha, create a new database, add your tables and sets to the new database. You should then be able to diagnose the problem.

      RE: .adb

      Stan,
I would have to copy everything into the new database name. I have had this happen before and it seems that for some reason the .adb file is bad and there is no way to fix it.
We need a routine that will allow us to fix the .adb file.

"have to copy everything into the new database" - I'm not sure what you mean.

If you create a new empty database , access the tables/sets tab of the control panel, right-click, choose add tables/sets, navigate to the proper directory if not shown, use the add all button....... and you're done.

yes, you are correct. I see what you mean.
I guess I could do that but the scripts will have to be copied manually.

            RE: .adb

Have you tried holding down ctrl and shift as you oipen the database to bypass your startup code? If you can open the database this way, it will confirm that the problems lies somewhere in your startup code and you can take a closer look at it.

Thanks Lenny, I'll try that, otherwise I will follow Stan's Fix.

                RE: .adb

You might be able to find some combination of settings for the form that you made to be the startup form for the "other" database which would allow it to open.

I'm assuming you changed the properties of that form and might be able to "fix it" by reseting them to defaults.

                  RE: .adb

Do you have any way to open the current application?

If so, try renaming the autoexec script and removing any startup form. If it then opens correctly, you will know that one of these is the problem and can proceed accordingly.

If you have no way to open the current app. Try building a new app as Stan suggested. This will at least tell you that the current forms, tables, etc. will work.

Then, it is possible to recover your old scripts but the explanation is not simple. So, before wasting a lot of my time explaining how, let's find out if you can get the first part to work.

Also, if you are starting this from an icon that you created, make absolutely sure you are pointing to the correct file. That's a mistake I've made more than once.

                    RE: .adb

FYI: I don't think there is a maximum number of global scripts. My largest app only has about 300 but somebody else mentioned having around 700 once.
