Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Pack just wont work!

I have a simple small database of names and email addresses of customers who have registered to receive a newsletter from us. I imported more, as more people had registered. I did not use the "do not import duplicates" as I thought it would not really matter on such a small database, and I could always pack them later. What a mistaka to maka! The mark duplicates works fine, but when I use "pack" it says it has packed the database, but when I open the brouse, they are all still there!

    Janet,

You have marked the duplicate records but have you then *deleted* the marked records. Packing a table removes the deleted records. Records merely marked are unaffected.

Action scripting will delete marked records for you. Then pack.

Even without packing the table deleted records will not be visible to you even though they are still physically present.

You could perform your task in two ways. Run delete duplicate records but your method of marking may be better as it is more forgiving. Packing will not remove marked records, it only marks records defined as being duplictes. I would suggest you review the marked records to see that your defination of duplicates founds what you wanted. If it did, you can run the operation deleted records and select, marked records as the only records to be removed. Once this operation runs sucessfully, you should run pack, which permantly removes the records.

Before runing these opertations, I would suggest that you backup your database, so that something goes wrong, you can recover.

Thanks to both of you for your help. I think my trouble is that for years I have worked with Alpha4v6, and unless I am suffering from senile decline, we always marked the duplicate records and then used pack to eliminate them.
I looked at the help file in Alpha5v5, and this is what it said:

        Pack Tables
This Action allows you to pack tables in your database. This will delete records marked for removal and compress memo files.

I find this confusing if it does not actually remove the records! Anyway, thanks to your advice, all is now well and the records have gone (I did run a back up first!)
I will struggle on with Apha5v5!
Regards, Janet (in the UK and a supporter of Bush and Blair!)

It must be a "versional" difference as you state.

"marked for removal" is not the same as "marked" in Alpha 5 Ver 4 or Ver 5
          There can be only one.
