Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Looking for possibilities of scanning

    Hi
One of the new clinets application we are planning will need to hold images of references forms, most likely these will be returned to the client in paper format, I am just wondering if I can create an image field, will I be able to write a OLE or X script, so when the client double click on the field, it will open the scanner and scan the image into it ?
These clients are dinosures, so the idea of using a separate scanning program, saving the file, then from Alpha attach the filename would kill them or sent them into the looney bin.

Ideally, I would love the option to double click on the image box to scan the document into PDF and then prompt user for a filename and save it within the form.

I personally dont think this is possible within the scope of Alpha after reading, but may be one of you experts had already done something like this already ?

    Thanks

RE: Looking for possibilities of scanning

Even if you use another programming language, you would have to have some kind of scanning program that will enable you to scan the reference forms.
Unless you are a good programmer and are able to write your own scanning program embedded with your database program.

A good choice will be C, C++, or Java, only one drawback will be that it would take you months if not years.

    Good luck

ImageXpress is an ActiveX control that might be functional under Alphafive. Check out their site at
      http://www.pegasustools.com/imagxpressse.htm
You can download the trial and see if it works for you.
The activex control can call up any twin scanner from within any application that support activex.

How tightly do you really need to bundle the scanner. Could scanner like Irfanview or XnView started from Alpha. Presumably both of these could be licensed for commercial use, even help you with the implementation. Xnview even has an SDK and works on multiple platforms.

RE: Looking for possibilities of scanning

              Hi everyone,

I really wish somebody would write an article on how to use activex controls in A5. Then when someone got a control to work the name could be posted to a list in the code archive. Otherwise it will be individual trial and error and most of use will be dead before we master the technique.

(I know it will be easier in version 6.)

RE: Looking for possibilities of scanning

I made a sample application that illustrate how to use an Activex component with Alpha. It is called vitasoft ActiveX control. It let you call up you scanner and webcam to scan directly from Alpha.
Include with the application is the trial version of vintasoft.
                1) Install the Activex componet
                2) Copy the Alpha five application into c:\activex
                3) Run the Twain form to chek the program.

Let me know what you think.

RE: Looking for possibilities of scanning

Sorry guys I made a mistake ... the name of the activex control is DBpix and you can download it from
                  http://www.ammara.com/downloads.html
Once you downloaded and installed the component, use the sample application to test it.

The vitasoft activex does not work with Alpha.
                  Sorry for my honest mistake.

With my webcam works great but I have not use scanner yet.
Try just in case with the more sofisticated Active X component from pegasus soft. It is called ImagXpress
                      http://pegasusimaging.com/imagxpressse.htm
It is more expensive but I has lot of features and controls. Download version 6.0 standard
To use it drop the Imagxpress control on the form and
create two buttoms to load the twain driver and to activate it.

                      1.- activex1.activex.TwainSelect()
                      2.- activex1.activex.TwainAcquire()
