Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Calculated field expression

    I am sure I will get a few laughs from this. But I am not a programmer and am tired of trying to find my own answer.

    I want the names from the fields - FIRST_NAME and LAST_NAME to fill in the field FULL_NAME. My expression (in the Calculated field expression box, Field Rules) FIRST_NAME-" "+ LAST_NAME - "" returns the correct result for the field FULL_NAME. When I enter the first and last name in my form. Why aren't those values then in the FULL_NAME field? What am I missing here?

    Thank you for your help!

    RE: Calculated field expression

    Hello Lu

    Is the problem with old records that were in the database before you made the calculated field and/or new records you are entering?

      RE: Calculated field expression

      Hi Lu,

      It seems that the calculated expression for full_name should be first_name+" "+last_name.

        Hello Brian;

        No, this is a clean database, no records but the test one.

        Thank you,

        Lu

          RE: Calculated field expression

          Hello Edward;

          I tried the expression that you suggested. It returns the correct result in the editor, just as the one I constructed. But the result still does not fill in the FULL_NAME Field. Is there something I need to add to the expression so that the returned value (characters) will fill in that field. If I enter date() as an expression for a date field, it fills the field with the date. Why won't my expression fill the field (it is defined as a character field)?

          Thank you for your response,

          Lu

            RE: Calculated field expression

            Lu,

            It is possible that your "Full Name" field isn't wide enough to hold the result.

            If your first name field is 20 characters and your last name field is 20 characters, then your full name field should be 40 characters.

            I also recommend triming your fields for better results. You calculated expression can read as follows:

            trim(firstname) + " " + trim(lastname)

            Hope this helps.

              Hello Scott;

              Thank you for your response. Yes, each name field is 15 characters. And the FULL_NAME field is 35 characters (do I allow for spaces?). I added the trim. No luck yet.

                Lu,

                I have attached a sample database with what you want done. Look at it and compare it to what you have.

                If you can't find the problem, you can either post your application on here or email me directly and we/ I will help you.

                    Scott;

                    Okay, I went back and re-entered the expression (checking back to what I entered previously, exactly the same). And now everything works fine.

                    Thank you for your help and patience.

                    Have a marvelous day,
