Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Changing imported data

1)After importing a table, I defined most fields to be all uppercase. Is there a way to get the data that was already imported to change to uppercase as well?
2)If I add an auto increment field to the table, how can I get the records that were imported to receive numbers in that field?
3)How do you add indexes to an imported table? I don't see the column in the "Edit table structure" screen.

I was also wondering if there was a way to preview what users of your application will see on their screens when the program runs. I haven't seen anything mentioned in the manuals.

    RE: Changing imported data

    Hi Pat,

I am working at importing an ASCII file right now as well, and have my own little problems with that as well as you can see in this forum.

I found, that the first question you ask could be done using an operation that you define first, save, and then run silently after the import attachted to whatever button you start the import sequence with.

In this way, file gets imported, operation starts and changes to uppercase.

Maybe the same system works for your other questions as well, for example the numbering part could be done this way I think.

I am not sure it is the best solution, but it is one!
Let me know how it worked out, you might help me with it as well.

    Regards,

    Marcel

      RE: Changing imported data

The main question that comes to mind is.....

      1) Will the import, once successfully designed, always overwrite an existing table, or will it import into an existing table?

      Meanwhile....

1)After importing a table, I defined most fields to be all uppercase. Is there a way to get the data that was already imported to change to uppercase as well? - an update operation is probably the best method here.

2)If I add an auto increment field to the table, how can I get the records that were imported to receive numbers in that field? - after editing the field rules for the auto-increment, choose the drop-down "Rules" menu, choose "re-evaluate field rules"

3)How do you add indexes to an imported table? I don't see the column in the "Edit table structure" screen. - Choice should be almost in the middle of the screen menubar, also available by right-click on table/set name, "Define Indexes"

I was also wondering if there was a way to preview what users of your application will see on their screens when the program runs. I haven't seen anything mentioned in the manuals. - How/why would this differ from what you see?

        RE: Changing imported data

Thanks Marcel and Stan...I will try those things out. Stan, as far as my last question about what the user sees and what I see - I was under the impression that the user wouldn't have access to such things as the control panel and I wasn't sure what else. Maybe I'm wrong, though. Let me know if you have any ideas.

        Thanks.

The user will have access to what you give them access to....

You have full control over menu choices available, whether or not the control panel is accessible, etc.

If your users will be accessing your application via the runtime, they will not be able to make changes to the app nor will they have access to the code tab - if the control panel is available to them. I believe those are the only restrictions.
