    Default Data Entry/Browse

I am trying to develop a Form (modeless)that maintains data in a table (no set involoved). Common to each record in the table is the Date (and date is a non-unique index).

I want the date field to be entered first and then the user can enter multiple records for the entered date in an embedded browse.

Where records exist for a date, after the user enters the required date the browse should show only records for that date and also allow changes to those records or entry of new records. Where records do not exist for a date, the user can go ahead and enter new records for the entered date.

I have tried running a custom query 'onchange' on the date field that filters for records for the entered date, but this does not seem to work.

Can anyone get me started on successfully developing this common type of data entry program? The issue is, how do I get the browse to filter for the date that is entered on the Form, and then also save any new records entered into the browse with that date.

    Regards,
    Scott

I am thinking a set would do it nicely, where the parent is just a date (1 field), all other data would go in the child.

    Hope it helps,

    Scott,

this may be that rare case where it makes sense to create a set in which the same table is specified as both parent and child, linked one to many. The date type field could be the linking field. The form would be based on the set, with an embedded browse displaying the "children".

    Scott,

I have done this before without using a set.

What I do is use a variable for the date which would allow me to filter the records in the browse based on its value. Now when I enter a new record in the browse the variable date is used to fill the actual date field of the record.

Excellent - thanks for the options. I think I will try the variable option before going down the set path - it may save some index rebuilds which seem to be part and parcel of successfully using sets.

    Hi Scott

I have created a variable (date field) in my Form and placed it on the form in TAB Seq 1 and my Browse is TAB seq 2.

On the Browse I have defined (event onarrive) the running of a custom query "rm-date=var->ws_inputdate". When I run the Form and tab from the date field to the browse I get an "Invalid Filter or Order Expression" error message. This is the code that the Genie generated for my customer query:

    DIM records_found as N
    Records_found = topparent.queryrun("Rm_date = Var->ws_inputdate","","","No","",.f.)

I have no filter defined at the Form level and no order expression.

Any idea why it does not like what I have done thus far?

    Regards,
    Scott
