Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Word Processing

First of all, I am an absolute newbie when it comes to Alpha, so if I sound like an idiot...I apologize in advance. We have a programmer who has developed a database in Alpha and we love it. It includes quite a bit of text that I guess is saved in RTF text? I want to create a yearbook using the data, but whenever I save any of it in Word format, it has all sorts of weird formatting, like a return at the end of every line. I don't want to have to reformat everything, it would be easier just typing it in Word to begin with, but I am clueless as to where to go for information. If this isn't the place, does anyone else know where to look? We would really like to be able to make this work for other clients, but not until I feel more comfortable moving stuff back and forth into some kind of Word Processing Package. Thanks for any guidence you can give me.

    Hi Lisa,

You could try and paste the RTF text into Notepad first and then copy and paste that into Word. Notepad being a simple text editor might remove the formating.

      RE: Word Processing

      Hi Lisa,

When I copy and paste from a5 RTF fields into Word, I do not get any of the special formatting characters that you describe. My office does this all day long - copying from word to alpha rtf fields and vice versa. The only thing we have noticed is that the font is sometimes bigger in word than it was in alpha, but that is easily corrected by selecting all text in the word document and changing the font size.

        RE: Word Processing

I haven't been copying and pasting but saving the report preview into Word. For some reason when I try to copy and paste, all it copies is what font it is! Is there a special command our programmer should be using when she creates the data box that I use? Also where do you predefine the style for the data box, I see a drop down menu for styles, but I want to be able to format my own. I know how to do it in Word. I typed in 10 pages of Bylaws for this membership book in a RTF box (I guess that's what it's called...it's the one with a little pencil in the corner) and then when I got the preview of the report on the screen, I chose the Word symbol, and it saved it in a Word format, but with all the extra formatting that I didn't want. GRRRRR. Our programmer is great, she just has always done calculations and data fields rather than text stuff. Maybe Alpha just isn't the right platform (I really want the answer to that to be that it IS the right platform, but that we just aren't attacking it right!). Thanks for taking the time to answer my beginner questions.

          Hello Lisa,

You can save reports as Rich Text Files. The saved rich text files can be opened in any program that deals with RTF files, such as MS Word, WordPerfect, etc. All the formating comes through as it was defined in Alpha Five. Just define a report that has the fields and layout you want. Save the report. Then right click on the report (the one you just created) and select the "Save As". The save as genie comes up. Make sure "Save to File" is selected, then on the next page, make sure you choose RTF format. Thats all there is to it.

          Good luck,
          Jim

            Lisa,

When I preview an Alpha Five report and pick, File, Save As, there are NO options to save as a Word file.

Alpha Five has a separate facility to merge with Word files, is this what you're doing?

Otherwise, I think (as others have suggested) your report should be Saved As an RTF (Rich Text Format). It can then be opened by Word later on.
