Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Clean Up Registry

    A5 V5

    If I run a Registry Clean program on my Pc that is used for A5 development, I get zillions of registry entries that are A5 related that point to invalid/non existant files. Should I allow my registry cleaner to remove them or will this cause issues?

    Regards,
    Scott

    RE: Clean Up Registry

    put this code in the button that closes your app and a5 - then see if that removes most of them:

    'by Cal Locklin
    DIM path(10) as c
    path(1) = a5.get_path() + chr(92)
    path(2) = a5.get_private_path() + chr(92)
    pcount = 2
    IF a5.get_private_path() a5.get_exe_path()
    path(3) = a5.get_exe_path() + chr(92)
    pcount = 3
    END IF
    '--- DON'T BOTHER WITH THE SHARED PATH or MASTER PATH BECAUSE IT SHOULD
    '--- NEVER PUT THESE FILES THERE.

    '-----------------------------------------------------------------------
    ' NOW DELETE ANY "$$**.*" FILES THAT ARE NOT LOCKED.
    '-----------------------------------------------------------------------
    fcount = 0
    FOR x = 1 to pcount
    type_of_files = 0 + FILE_FIND_ARCHIVE + FILE_FIND_READONLY + FILE_FIND_HIDDEN
    dfiles = filefind.first( path(x) + "$$*.*", type_of_files )
    WHILE .not.dfiles.eof()
    fname = dfiles.name() '*** GET THE FILE NAME.
    ON ERROR goto Continue_next '*** FIND OUT IF THE FILE IS LOCKED.
    fp = file.open( fname, file_rw_exclusive )
    ON ERROR goto 0
    fp.close() '*** FILE IS NOT LOCKED SO CLOSE IT AND REMOVE IT.
    file.remove( fname )
    fcount = fcount + 1
    '---------------
    Continue_next:
    '---------------
    ON ERROR goto 0
    dfiles.next() '*** GET NEXT FILE IN LIST.
    statusbar.robot()
    END WHILE
    NEXT
    a5.close()

      A5 uses the registry to save information about form position, size, etc. If you are doing a lot of design work and adding and removing forms, tables etc, you will get a lot of junk left over. The A5 registry values are found in

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 5.0

      Even if the whole branch is deleted, A5 will rebuild most of the entries. However, you don't want to do that since the information includes all of the settings, registration number, etc. There are a couple branches that have information that can be deleted and the program will rebuild as needed

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 5.0\INDX

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 5.0\Tables

      all of the braches starting

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alpha Software\Alpha Five 5.0\xdialog.

      ALWAYS back up the registry before you make ANY changes. I would hope you registry cleaner program does that for you. By the way, what program are you using?

        RE: Clean Up Registry

        Hi Martin

        Thanks - maybe you meant to post this against my other message re: .mpx files on disk rather than registry entries. Anyway - I have implemented the script and added the applications image directory to the Path array since it is a common deposit location.

        Regards,
        Scott

          Hi Jerry

          I am using the one found here http://www.jv16.org/

          Just wondering - are the registry 'deposits' also being looked at as an issue.

          Regards,

            "registry deposits" as an issue? I doubt it. It is a common practice in many programs to use the registry to store information. It is just a database available to all users. Like any database, it is imperfect and requires maintenance. It is a shame Microsoft doesn't help much. Their registry cleaners don't do much.

            Thanks for the link. I will check it out.

              My 2c - if applications did not 'misuse' it then it would not need as much maintenance..
