Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Record Events Question

    Hello All,

    Here's what I am trying to accomplish.

    Using X-Dialog, I am prompting the user for information that needs to be collected when creating a new record in a table. For the sake of discussion, let's say I am asking for a first name and a last name in the dialog.

    Once the user is finished entering the required info in the X-Dialog, I am using the action scripting action "X-Basic Enter Record" to open the table, create a new record, write the value of the two variables to the appropriate fields, save the record and close the table...works great.

    Now, I want to open a form that displays the first and last name from the record I just created. Opening the form is easy enough, but how do I make it navigate to the correct record?

    My inclination is to "upon the creation" of the new record, write the value of the "Calculated Field" let's call it "User_Id" that uniquely identifies each record in the table to a global variable, then open the form with this variable used in the filter expression...I can't make it work to save my life.

    I've tried different record level events and I just haven't found the right combination...the global variable never gets created.

    Any help or advice you all can offer will be accepted with open arms!

    Thanks

    Louis

    RE: Record Events Question

    If you are creating a new record in x-basic, then immediately opening a form to edit that record, it SHOULD be the last record in record number order.

    Set your index to record number order, fetch last, then open the form.

      RE: Record Events Question

      Sorry, sent before finishing...

      You still have first name and last name in variables. If you have a name index, just do a fetch _find by name, and you will have the record you created.

        RE: Record Events Question

        Tom,

        Thanks for the reply!

        What is the possibility of another user on the network creating a new record in-between the time that my record is created and the form is opened and the "last" record is fetched?

          Tom,

          How many John Smith's are there in the world? Wouldn't this be a potential problem?

            RE: Record Events Question

            Hello Louis,

            Tom's answer is of course correct. Tom runs the largest installed application built on Alpha Five that I am aware of. But if you want to open a form to this record, where the table underlying the form in question is part of a set rather than the individual table, then here is how I approach this:

            t.enter_end() 'the end of the record entry process
            vRec = t.recno()
            t.close()
            frm.load("MyForm")
            frm.recno_goto(vRec)
            frm.show()
            frm.activate()

            Good luck,
            Jim

              Ooops, wrong syntax, should be:

              t.enter_end() 'the end of the record entry process
              vRec = t.recno()
              t.close()
              frm = form.load("MyForm")
              frm.recno_goto(vRec)
              frm.show()
              frm.activate()

                Tom and Jim,

                Thanks for the help!

                This forum is more valuable than any tech support group I've ever seen.

                Best regards,

                Louis

                  RE: Record Events Question

                  Jim, you are much too complimentary. Your method will assure that the appropriate record is retrieved. With mine, there is some chance.

                  Louis,
                  I was wondering about how you would get around the unique name issue, but maybe there is a restriction on how many john smiths are allowed to do business with you.

                  We don't really run into the name issue as we use a unique identifier (ssn) for each of our customers. And, if that's not good enough, we also assign a unique case number. We do have many, many people with the same name, but when we do a find, I control the search and display a message box telling the searcher (if they use name) that this is the first instance of this name and that they should pgdn until they find the correct person.

                  Tom
