Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Date Change Field Rule

    I have two fields among many on a form. One of the fields is a date field and the other is a comments field. What I would like to happen is the that the date automatically changes to the current date whenever a change is made to the commments field. I know I can do this on the form itself with the onchange command but I was wondering if it could be done within in the field rules.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Dave,
    Yes, via field rules, simple default expression date(). You could even make it a skip field so that the user can't change it.

        Keith,
        If I do that, won't the date change everytime a different field is changed on the form when I only want the date to change when this particular comments field is changed.

        Thanks,
        Dave

          oopps,
          The old maxim RTFS, sorry didn't read the question fully. So pleased to be able to help someone my fingers worked before my brain :-(

          I would suppose what you would need is like table.get.mode() but for the field. The only thing I know of is Field.onedit, but the manual says for internal use only.

            Dave,

            In the field rules for the comments field, select the Event tab, choose OnEditField and write an Action Script using the Code Editor to update the date field to date(). That should work.

            Kind regards,

                Robin, thanks for the reply. As far as the script goes, I'm not sure how to write that. Would it be as simple as:field=date()?

                  If you are doing it in action scripting, there is an action to set the value of an object.

                    RE: Date Change Field Rule

                    Al, I basically wrote an action script then copied it to the field rule. It kinda works and kinda doesn't. Again, I want the date to change if one of two fields is changed. One is a comment field and the other is a yes/no field. If I put a y in the field, the date doesn't fill in right away. I have to click off that field and click back on it then the date fills in. I think what I will do for now is put a condition on the on-change event on the form. This is not what we really wanted but will work for us for now. Thanks for your help.

                      Dave,

                      Did you put the Action Script code into the field rules for both fields?

                        No, I just put it in one field to test it.

                          Dave,

                          Well, that must be the reason why the date will update properly when changing the comment field but remain the same when changing the yes/no field. Do the same for the latter field and see if that doesn't make it work as you expect.

                              The strange about this whole thing is even if I don't change anything in the yes/no field but just click in it, the date will change. Below is what I put in the field rule on-edit event.

                              'Set 'Value' property of 'Mbrdirverif' in Form 's_indall_w_CHILD_FORMs' .
                              DIM form_name as c
                              if is_object(topparent.this) then
                              form_name = topparent.name()+".this"
                              else
                              form_name = ""
                              end if

                              DELETE expression_result
                              expression_result = eval("if(mbrdiraddit='Y'.or.mbrdiraddit='N',date(),{})",form_name)
                              topparent:Mbrdirverif.value = expression_result.
