Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Confued by Database Compact error message ...

Gary, I share the views of the both John and Jerry. Something in your app is causing one or more tables to be left open, or at least Windows thinks they're open. This would be on the server in a networked situation. Closing down all workstations. Actually powering them down. Then powering down the server and starting it up again will close any open files.

In my own work I NEVER compact the running database. All development work is done in a separate self-contained folder, tested, compacted, and then copied to the live folder on the server, after first verifying that all workstations on the LAN have exited Alpha Five. Why are you compacting the live tables ?

if you have not already tried this, have the db open WITHOUT an autoexec, and without opening ANY form, and without running any commands during the startup - see if that does anything. Would help remove any startup possibilities.

Why not? Why not? Why not? Why not?

John, you are correct. There are a few situations that do write to the data dictionaries, including any user saved setting or operation that saves information to a data dictionary. Word merge does write to the data dictionary, as well as a few others. Typically, these items save just text or text strings, which shouldn't give trouble. Restoring a good older version should have little effect.

I really want to thank all you guys for your insights, and the time taken to help out. It is truly appreciated.

As it turns out, Peter's script saved the day. He emailed me a corrected version of it. I applied it to the two problem data dictionaries, and the cure was instantaneous. Database Compact now works without a hitch. This script is quite amazing. Thank you VERY much!!

Tom, it's posted in this thread up above. Except my global variable has to be "transmuted" - also above.

                Jerry,
If the file is not getting written to - either on pupose or accidentally - it's hard to imagine it getting corrupted unless there is a machine hiccup.
In a5v4.5, my experience was that once your development was completed, the dictionary files were as solid as a rock.
In a5v5 I've seen more situations where compacting dictionaries or restoring them was necessary in a realtime
                or non developmental situation

I'm hoping your script can help me. I copied it but there seems to be an error in this line:

                  Msg1 = vFilename + chr(13) + "Table Compacted" + chr(13) + \

I don't very little about codes so I don't know what to do.

P.S. What is the reason that there is no problem with compacting the database when it is run as part of the backup process?

RE: Confused by Database Compact error message ...

Probably that all the forms(and other objects) are closed first by the backup. Then there is no conflict with a file being open.
