Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't type double quotes in fields.

    Hi,

After a sign of Rene Stout I discovered a strange change in typing behaviour in Alpha Five of the Double Quote ", (other charachters are `, ', ^, ~). When I'm building a table and standing in the Field Rules, Data Entry Tab and the Default value field, I can't type the default value when it is a string value. I want to type "P001" but the quotes aren't accepted by Alpha Five. This happens also standing in a normal text field. When I go to the Expression Builder the quotes are accepted as usual and also in a RTFMEMO field.

I discovered also that the way I used to type an , etc. doesn't work in Alpa Five in those fields. Normally I type "a to get and 'e to get a .

I experimented with the language settings, code pages but nothing helped. The only explanation is that the keybord buffer is captured by an routine in Alpha Five. A recent virus W32/Bugbear did the same. It captured the keyboard buffer and resulted in the same behaviour which could be tested under Word.
I tested my machine for virusses but al came out negative (running Sophos and ZoneAlarm Pro). I'm running Alpha build 1498-1051.

Does anyone have a solution or discovered the same behaviour?

    TIA,

    Marcel Kollenaar

    Marcel,

I have tested this and do not have this as a problem. I know this does not help you directly other than it is on your machine and not an Alpha error.

      Hi Keith,

Thank you for this information. Since Rene Stout (also Dutch) does speak about the same problem I think it has to do with country settings on my/our machine(s). Two Dutch people with the same input problem of ".

RE: Can't type double quotes in fields.

        Hello Keith,

I meantime I tested all my programs on my machine concerning the input of the " or etc. I draw the conclusion that it is defenitly a Alpha Five Problem. All the programs I tested are working correctly.
I started Alpha Five version 1.0.2 (1995) and it has the same behaviour. It's Alpha related.

I checked/read all security patches I've installed since June and even deinstalled KB824141. This KB has something to do with listboxes etc. It wasn't the solution.

The erratic behaviour is A5 related.
We can use all special characters like in all of our other databases residing on the very same computer. Using the keyboard for entering these characters in A5 produces only the basic character a u i a. Copying the correct characters out of another database and pasting them into A5 results in a correct character appearance in A5 too.
IMHO it has something to do with the use of double keys since all special characters that have their own key (like on our Belgian keyboards) are displayed correctly. And Marc could be right since A5 is accepting these characters once you are able to enter them correctly.
In any case we hope the A5 folks are still working on this issue as for our business with lots of French and German customers a normal keyboard input and behaviour is mandatory.

              Marcel,
I did a test on my (Dutch) computer and it looks as if its working. If you use the default value "P001" the result is P001 in the field. If on the other hand you want the complete value "P001" in the field you need to enclose the value in single quotes.
