Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Right click menu - add help

Does anyone know if it is possible to add to the right click menu, a link to the context sensitive help defined using Properties, help entry.

This would eliminate the need to use the keyboard (F1).

See attached screen shot for an example

    Thanks, John

      John,

All though I have not tried this, I would say the answer is yes.

Just make a custom right-click menu that includes everything you want and make a menu item labeled help and put some xbasic in the code box. Maybe sys_send_keys("{F1}")

If your using the Alpha help context ther is already a predefined action you can add.

Hope this is what you wanted.

            John,
You can do this with action scripting. There is a genie to "display help topic".

              Bill

Have used the Action Script genie to setup a general help on every form. I'm trying to get to the context sensitive help on each button.
At the moment the only way to activate is to right click on the button then hit F1.
I would like to eliminate the F1 action.

              Thanks, John

RE: Right click menu - add help

                John,

What I was trying to say was that action scripting can write your context-sensitive menu item for you.

Create a new menu. Add an item; use action scripting just as you would if you were creating a button.

Alternatively, create the button, copy the code to the clipboard, and paste it on to the new menu item.

                Or do I misunderstand something?

I don't think I explained my situation correctly or am suffering another "Sometimers moment".

My menu contains a button labeled "Customer".
The help entry points to the context sensitive help file. ON push contains an action script to open the Customer form.

In order to access the context sensitive help, I must right click on the button, then press F1. Would be slick if you could right click & one of the options was "Open Context Sensitive Help"

                  See attached .jpg

                  Thanks, John

RE: Right click menu - add help

                    Hi John,

We're on the same page. What you want to do is create a custom right click menu and add a fetch-help item to it.

                    Here is what you do:
                    -create a new menu
-specify as default the form-view right click menu
(this will start you out with all the items in you screen capture)
-add a new item for the help action and use the same code as your button does to call help.

If you get hung up post your application. Any number of people could do this for you in 5 minutes.

And of course you must also edit your form's properties to specify that your new custom menu is to be used as a form right click menu.
