Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multi field sort

I have a set which consists of a date table as the parent and a work order table as the child. They are linked by a date field. This is designed to track schedule for my technicians. I have a form which has a embedded browes containing the work order info. I have several buttons which do a quick sort on various fields but what I can't figure out how to do is create a button that will do a multi field sort on two fields without going thru the multi sort dialog box. Basically a quick sort button with two fields.

Any ideas for a script or operation would be greatly appreciated.

    Only two specific fields?

Always in the same sort sequence?

      Yes, same fields, same order.

Then why not put a button on the form and have it run a predefined query? The query wouldn't have a filter expression, but it would have an order expression. Might that be the ticket?

I tried that without success. It would send the form to the first parent record and still not sort the child right.

I was creating the query form the set, not the child table.

Ok, since there are dozens of possibilities here, how about uploading a working model with an explanation of how you want to fix it ? Just attach a zip file containing your database (trimmed down) and a text file explaining what you need, in detail).

              Tom,
Heres a zip file, wodate.zip. I loaded the tables in a test database and it seemed to work.

As you will see there are several buttons that will sort the embedded browes (Work order info) by tech, time or zip.

I would like a button that will do a multi sort by tech first and then time slot.

I've tried queries, indexes and attempting to record the multi sort dialog box with no success.

              Thanks, Kyle

                Kyle,

Unzip the attachment to an empty folder. Create a test database there, and then 'add' the tables and sets.

I've put a button on your 'Day_Schedule_Lookup' form which does what you want. It's labelled 'Tech_Time'.

For future reference please specify the particular form you are trying to modify when posting sample databases to the board. In this case I had to open and play with all your forms before I finally find the one that you were referencing in your message. Took longer to find the form than to produce the script. Action Scripting is great!

Well, it would help if I actually attached the file, now wouldn't it?

                  Here it is.

                    Tom

You're a live saver. Works like a charm. That was about the only command I didn't try.

Sorry for not mentioning the form, I will keep that in mind for the future. It's the first time I have used the message board.

                    Thanks again

                      Kyle,

thanks for the report. I'm glad it's working as you want.

There's no reason to apologize, I just wanted to suggest a tip to make things easier next go around, and to help you understand why. Ok?

It takes a while to find the right balance between too much detail and not enough. This is made more difficult by the fact that we know a lot about our own applications, but others haven't got a clue. Even though I've been doing it a while now there are plenty of times when I miss it, too.

                      Good luck with your project.
