Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Variables won't save

    here's an odd one.
Code editor, global variable, initialize at startup.
Try saving a global variable named:
    co_inf_fax_cover_path

    Alpha changes it to:
    co_inf_fa_xcover_path

    Can someone confirm this.
I was under the impression that underscores were ok in variable names. (I hope they are or I've got a lot of changing to do)

    Thanks
    Russ

BTW, this is a variable that I normally dim in the autoexec and have no problem with it. I was trying something so I wanted to dim it in the code editor.

      Russ,

Worked ok for me. What was your exact steps? Did you give the variable a null value after you dim'd it?

        Russ,

        A communication tip:

Down the line it probably will help you to stop thinking of 'saving variables' when you really mean 'initializing' them. For many of us 'saving' means taking something that exists only in memory and storing it on disk. Here it looks like you're trying to declare a global variable on startup and give it an initial value. When this happens the value exists only in memory and has not been saved anywhere. See what I mean ? -- tom

          Russ,

Here's copy of note just written to myself.

          Note to self:
Before offering advice make sure you
          undestand the scenario.

I see now that my previous post was off point (just a little bit!). Sorry. -- tom

It would appear the problem is the word "fax" with the underscore after it, not the just the underscore. Try any variable name with the word "fax_" and the name changes to "fa_x". Either fax and underscore is a reserved name or this is indeed an error.

              It happens.
In version 4.5 and others ( not a5v5 ) you couldn't dim a variable beginning with "as". I remember Selwyn saying this would have been a very big deal to fix.

              Interactive in 4.5
              dim ashcan as c

What's odd is I have been using this variable, dimmed and assigned in autoexec for quite a while and never before had a problem. I guess I'll change it but now I'm worried what other variables will crap out on me. This had me confused for a while as my code wouldn't work for no apparent reason, then I noticed the variable thing.

Anyone from Alpha care to comment on this? Is this (fax) a nono. What other reserved variable names are there?

                  RE: Variables won't save

it is a bug in the dialog box where you define the global var.

there is nothing wrong with the variable name.

if you defined this variable in your autoexec script, for example, it would work.

i will fix the bug for the next release.

                  thanks again.
